Eastleigh extended their unbeaten start to the new National League season to six matches when they beat Aldershot Town 2-1 at the Recreation Ground on Saturday, and the south coast side have already emerged as one of the favourites for promotion this season in the non-league top flight.
Eastleigh’s inaugural season in the National League ended in a successful campaign as they finished in fourth place and earned a play-off berth in their first season at this level. The Spitfires will now be looking to go a step further this term and break into League Two which would be a monumental achievement.
They return to their Silverlake Stadium this afternoon when they play host to Torquay United who have really lost their way in the past couple of seasons. Former Oxford United striker James Constable (5 goals) is already on a goal-scoring streak and looks a solid anytime goalscorer option for today’s clash.
Visitors Torquay United dropped down to the National League from League Two a couple of seasons ago, and despite being one of the teams to beat initially at this level (as they were expected to bounce straight back), things haven’t turned out that way for The Seagulls.
Torquay’s form has been indifferent to say the least, but home form at Plainmoor remains their best chance of making an assault on a play-off position this season. Overall, Torquay have won just once in their last five matches, which was a 3-2 away win at Halifax Town of all places.
But recent defeats to Wrexham, Woking and Cheltenham Town suggest that they are not quite up to scratch against the better teams at this level.
With this in mind, I’ll back a strong Eastleigh outfit to take full advantage of their home form today and take the points in perhaps a 2-1 win with Constable getting on the scoresheet.
