Grimsby Town registered back-to-back wins at the weekend when they beat chester 3-0 at Blundell Park which handed Grimsby their third home win of the season.
Grimsby go into tonight’s clash occupying a top half position and another three points tonight could see The Mariners jump into a top five spot courtesy of their superior goal difference. A 7-0 home win over Alfreton Town earlier in the season has certainly boosted their goal difference, and along with wins over Welling United and Chester, Grimsby will be in confident mood of adding another three points here tonight.
Grimsby’s overall home record stands at 3-2-1 13/3 and they’ve failed to score on just three occasions in their last fifteen home matches. Midfielder Neilson (5 goals) along with forwards John-Lewis and Pittman (3 goals apiece) look the most likely goalscorers for the hosts.
Visitors Southport are enduring a terrible run of form going into tonight’s match as they’ve lost their last four Conference Premier matches on the trot with home defeats to Alfreton Town 0-2 and Bristol Rovers 0-1 at the weekend, along with defeats on the road at Chester and Macclesfield Town 0-2 and 0-3 respectively.
You’ll perhaps notice that Southport have failed to score in each of these last four matches, hence the poor results, and this has placed them once again in the bottom reaches of the division and they currently occupy fourth from bottom in the division as a result.
The Sandgrounder’s away record stands at 0-2-4 5/13 and they’ve gone a staggering twenty eight (28) away matches without a win which must be some kind of record in this division without being relegated!
With this very poor away record in mind, and the fact that Grimsby are on the back of two consecutive wins, I’ll back the hosts to win this one to nil, perhaps by a 2-0 scoreline.
