Group E comes to a close on Wednesday night with both fixtures being played simultaneously, and i start with Italy taking on Republic of Ireland at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille as the Italians look to confirm top spot in their group, although their place in the last 16 has already been booked.
Italy have started in strong fashion in the Euro 2016 against pre-tournament expectations as the Azzurri are usually notoriously slow starters in major tournaments, but wins against Belgium 2-0 and Sweden 1-0 have done the job for them so far.
Italy have now registered four wins on the trot in all competitions going into tonight’s final group game against the Irish, and perhaps more importantly, they’ve managed to keep clean sheets in each of these matches. The Italians are renowned for their compact and disciplined defence and this has again been on show in the Euro 2016 finals.
Onto Republic of Ireland, and much was spoken about Martin O’Neill’s side ahead of the tournament as they were anticipated to run the Italians close in Group E, but with just one point from their first two group games, they’re in real danger of not progressing into the next stages.
A 1-1 draw against Sweden in their opener was a good result, but they were rocked by Belgium in a 3-0 defeat which was expected to be a closely fought encounter, but Belgium finally clicked into gear after promising for so long.
The Irish now have a mountain to climb against Italy who are already through, and won’t be wanting to suffer a defeat before the knock-out stages begin I assure you!
