The Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon commenced over the weekend, and my first pick of the tournament features the opening match of Group C with Ivory Coast taking on Togo with Ivory Coast in reasonable form ahead of this clash.
Ivory Coast have now put together a 12-match unbeaten run ahead of this tournament and have won their last two matches on the trot with victories gained over Sweden in a 2-1 win away from home and a 3-0 home win over Uganda, both of which were international friendlies.
The Ivorians head into this year’s tournament as the defending champions following their win on penalties over Ghana after the 90 minutes failed to produce a goal in a 0-0 stalemate. This year, they’re in Group C along with tonight’s opponents Togo along with Congo DR and Morocco.
Togo failed to qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, but they’ve made it through to this year’s tournament as they look to gain revenge on Ivory Coast following defeat last time to the Ivorians in a 2-1 loss back in the 2013 tournament.
The 2013 tournament in South Africa saw Togo emerge from Group D as runners-up to this evening’s opponents Ivory Coast as they lost (to Ivory Coast), beat Algeria and draw with Tunisia, only to exit at the quarter-final stage in extra time to Burkina Faso.
In recent times, Togo have lost just once in their last eight matches in all competitions, but lost in their last friendly before this tournament in a 2-1 defeat to fellow Group C participants Morocco back in November of last year.
