It’s a quick delve into the most famous competition of all – the English FA Cup and the preliminary rounds are underway with an all-National League tie between hosts Lincoln City and visitors Tranmere Rovers next on my agenda.
Just two league places and just one point separate these two teams going onto tonight’s FA Cup qualifier as both teams have shown some reasonable form in the early stages of the National League season. Lincoln City still remain unbeaten at Sincil Bank with a solid record of 4-4-0 16/8 and have won four of their last five matches overall.
Lincoln’s forwards Rhead (11 goals) and Hearn (7 goals) look the best anytime goalscorer options with defender Beevers being the surprise supplier with 5 assists so far. The Imps have kept just two clean sheets on home turf though in their opening eight matches.
Visitors Tranmere Rovers currently sit in 5th place in the National League as they bid to make a swift return to the football league following their disappointing relegation from League Two at the end of last season.
They too hold a pretty solid record on the road so far this term with stats of 3-5-1 14/9 but they’ve managed just one win from their last four as they drew 2-2 with Wrexham and then suffered back-to-back defeats against Eastleigh and Barrow before turning over National League leaders Forest Green Rovers 2-0 on the weekend.
Rovers striker Mangan (7 goals) heads Tranmere’s goalscoring charts and he’s an experienced campaigner at this level. He’s assisted by Norwood (4 goals, 4 assists) up front, and these two are the usual suspects when it comes to goalscoring for the visitors.
Anything can happen in the Cup as we know, but I fancy both teams to score here tonight as they’re closely matched although the result really could go either way!
