PETERBOROUGH v COLCHESTER – Pick: 1 – 02 April 2014

Posh to win United front at London Road

League One/Two Tips

Football – England – League One

Wednesday 2nd April 2014  -Kickoff:  1945hrs

Play-off hopefuls Peterborough United take on lower half club Colchester United at London Road on Wednesday night as the hosts look to cement their play-off position with the competition heating up.

With the season now in it’s last few weeks, Peterborough will be very aware that they cannot afford to slip up in their remaining home matches to give them the best chance possible of making the play-offs, particularly given that they’ll be travelling to League One leaders Wolves on Saturday.

In addition, Peterborough have won only twice in their last seven which were a 4-2 home win over Crewe Alexandra and a 2-0 win at MK Dons, but three away defeats at Crawley Town, Sheffield United and Preston North End along with home losses against Bristol City and Rotherham United have put The Posh on notice.

Peterborough’s overall home record stands at  10-2-6  25/20 and will be looking to bounce back with a win tonight following back-to-back defeats. Striker Assombalonga (19 goals, 3 assists) has been a revelation this season for Posh and I’m looking to him as anytime goalscorer to fire Peterborough into the play-offs come the end of April.

Visitors Colchester United make their third away trip on the trot to Peterborough on Wednesday night as they look to end a run of two defeats on the trot having lost previously away at Wolves 2-4 and Notts County 0-2.

Colchester have won just once in their last six matches which was a 1-0 home win over relegation strugglers Shrewsbury Town, but their recent results have left the Essex outfit just three points and three places above the relegation zone with four crucial matches after tonight’s encounter as they take on Tranmere Rovers, Stevenage, Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra.

Colchester’s overall away record stands at a disappointing  3-8-8  20/28 and they’re on a bad run of results on the road having lost five of their last six on their travels losing at Port Vale, Leyton Orient, Crawley, Wolves and Notts County, with their only saving grace being a recent 0-0 draw at Swindon Town. It’s also interesting to note that Colchester have played top half opposition ten times so far this season and have yet to win with a record of  0-5-5  8/17.

The incentive is surely with Peterborough tonight as they look to maintain their play-off claims, along with Assombalonga up front, they should have enough about them to secure the points tonight at London Road – I’ll go for a 2-1 home win here.
