PETERBOROUGH v GILLINGHAM – Pick: 1 – 08 April 2014

Posh push for promotion at Gills expense

League One/Two Tips

Football – England – League One

Tuesday 8th April 2014 – Kickoff:  1945hrs

Play-off candidates Peterborough United take on lower half club Gillingham at London Road on Tuesday night with the hosts still needing further points to confirm their play-off berth.

With inconsistent results recently, Peterborough have yet to really cement the remaining sixth place position in League One having lost three of their last four with defeats against Rotherham United, Preston North End and Wolves, but they have recently won against MK Dons and Colchester United. These results lead me to believe that The Posh are a little way off from challenging the ‘big boys’ of the top two of League One, but they get the job done against teams from mid-table downwards.

Their home form has on the whole been pretty steady as they’ve lost just twice in their last seven with wins over Notts County, Crewe Alexandra and Colchester and they have an overall record of  11-2-6  27/20. Peterborough have also beaten Wolves and Preston North End so far this season on home turf.

Visitors Gillingham lost 3-4 at home to Rotherham United at the weekend as their inconsistent performances continued with recent wins over Coventry City and MK Dons being spoiled by defeats against Crewe Alexandra and Rotherham along with a draw against Bradford City.

The Gills’ inconsistencies have resulted in the Kent outfit occupying a lower half position in League One although they do currently hold a five point cushion over Crewe Alexandra who are in the last remaining relegation spot. Away from home, Gillingham’s overall record is a poor one which stands at  5-2-12  22/37 and they’ve kept just two clean sheets on their travels all season.

Gillingham still need to pick up points to ensure their League One safety, but with a leaky defence especially away from home, it looks likely that they will have to wait perhaps until the last couple of weeks, if not the final day, to confirm their status.

Peterborough have been inconsistent lately but with the lure of attaining that last play-off place and home advantage, they should have enough to take the points here tonight.
