It’s the start of the Austrian Bundesliga season this Saturday and my first pick features hosts Rapid Vienna taking on SV Ried at their Allianz Stadion with the home side in pretty good shape follwing a promising ‘off season’.
Rapid Vienna have played numerous friendlies in their warm-up for the new season, and they have won them all; wins over Ranshofen, Mannsworth, Szombathelyi, Rubin Kazan and Chelsea along with the Austrian Cup win over Karabakh mean they’ve won their last six matches on the trot overall.
Rapid Vienna finished second to Red Bull Salzburg, and they’ll soon be entering the Europa League stages once the qualifiers have been done and dusted. Forwards Jelic and Tomi will be looking to get things off to a good start for the hosts today.
Visitors Ried finished in a bottom half position in the Austrian Bundesliga at the end of last season as they ended up in 7th place (out of a ten team league), while winning just once away from home all season.
Ried finished with a poor looking away record of 1-7-10 19/35 and they also conceded the most number of goals away from home in the whole division. And even though they recently registered a 4-1 win away from home in the Austrian Cup, they’re likely to face much stiffer competition here this afternoon.
Given their leaky defensive stats of last season’s away matches, I’ll back the home side to cover the -1 asian handicap line here to get their season off to a good start.
