In a somewhat disjointed end to the Portuguese top flight season, there still remain a few matches to be played to wrap up the domestic season, and my next pick features third placed Sporting taking on mid-table Chaves at their Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon.
Sporting have already secured a Champions League qualifier spot, but with this game being their last home match of the season, I’m expecting the home side to go out with a bang here as the visitors Chaves have seemingly nothing to play for.
That said, Sporting will need to forget about their recent back-to-back defeats to Belenenses and Feirense which put paid to any hopes of an automatic Champions League berth, although second placed Porto already possessed a sizeable cushion ahead of them. Sporting’s home record stands at 11-3-2 33/13 and their leading goalscorer is Dost (31 goals).
Visitors Chaves sit in a comfortable mid-table position which is largely due to a solid home record which has seen them lose on just three occasions this season, but their away form and record has been less convincing with stats of 2-6-8 15/23 to date.
Overall form has been poor too though as Chaves have collected just one league win from their last 11 in the Primeira Liga, while they’ve now gone 13 away matches without a win on their travels, and the end of the season seemingly can’t come quick enough for the visitors!
With just three clean sheets on the road all season (two of which came in the early stages of the season), I’m confident that Sporting can not only win this match but cover the asian line too.
