Despite being unceremoniously dumped out of the Champions League play-offs, Steaua Bucharest bounced back in their domestic Romanian Liga 1 campaign with a 1-0 win away at Pandurii Targu and this has followed earlier good results in the new season for tonight’s hosts.
Steaua Bucharest have started the new Romanian top flight season unbeaten and they remain so after their first five matches of the season, winning four of these with victories gained against Viitorul, Concordia Chiajna, Botosani and the aforementioned Pandurri.
The other game was a 1-1 draw against fierce city rivals Dinamo Bucharest, but if they take all three points on Wednesday night they will move four points clear of Dinamo at the top of the division which must be motive enough surely.
Visitors Iasi head into Wednesday night’s encounter in Bucharest on the back of three Liga 1 matches without a win following a 2-0 defeat away at Craiova and then 0-0 stalemates against Viitorul and Concordia Chiajna.
Away from home, CSM Iasi have returned some mixed results so far this season with a win, draw and defeat in equal measure within their overall road record of 1-1-1 3/2, but to put this into perspective, their solitary win was registered at second from bottom Targu Mures.
This evening they’re set to be up against it when they face Steaua Bucharest in their own backyard and I fancy they’ll do well to gain at least a point against the current league leaders, as I can see only one result here this evening.
