This Saturday marks the start of the new Belgian domestic season and my first pick features hosts Zulte-Waregem taking on newcomers Eupen at their Regenboogstadion ground in the Jupiler League as the hosts look to build upon their promising pre-season form.
Zulte-Waregem have put together s even match unbeaten run in their warm-up games prior to this new season, having won six of these seven matches which should put them in a confident frame of mind ahead of their season-opener against Eupen.
Zulte-Waregem achieved a Championship round place in the play-offs at the end of last season, but finished bottom of the 6-team group so they’ll be hoping to improve upon their finish this season. The hosts’ overall home record ended up on 7-4-4 30/22 at the end of the regular season.
Visitors Eupen achieved promotion from the Proximus League via the play-offs at the end of last season but they’ll be facing a tough encounter away from home in their first match in the Belgian top flight this evening at Zulte-Waregem.
Eupen’s last appearance at this level was five years ago as they failed in their bid for top level survival; one away win from their last nine of the season had a lot to do with their relegation and they’ll no doubt be hoping they can improve upon their form on their travels this time around.
With this being the first match of the season, I’ll back the hosts with the round ball but I do expect them to win here.
