The FIFA Club World Cup, for all it’s lack of real competition and interest, is going on in Japan at the moment and European Champions Chelsea are out there. After Rafa Benitez picked up his first Premier League win with a 3-1 triumph at Sunderland, the Blues step into the competition at the semi final stage where they will play Monterrey on December 13th. The Club World Cup is the coming together of all the champions of the FIFA Confederations and this is the ninth edition. The two big guns, Chelsea and Brazilian side Corinthians don’t show up until the semi finals while the other sides have to play qualifiers and then a quarter final. So the bias is on there being yet another repeat of the final between the European and CONMEBOL Champions. Little surprise that only once out of the previous eight editions has there been a final that wasn’t between the representatives of those two Confederations.

Chelsea will face North and Central American champions Monterrey in their semi final match, and will be fully expecting to meet Corinthians in the final. Corinthians have won the event once, back in the inaugural year of 2000. As a hot trend, the last four editions of the FIFA Club World Cup have been won by Europe’s representatives (AC Milan, Man Utd, Barcelona, Inter and Barcelona again). The only European team to lose the final of the Club World Cup was Liverpool back in 2005. There just doesn’t look anything which can go wrong to stop the Chelsea v Monterrey finale, so FIFA Club World Cup betting is unlikely to extend beyond that. Chelsea are 4/6 favourites at online bookmaker SkyBet to take the title, with Brazilians, Corinthians, who won the Copa Libertadores second favourites at 7/4. While Chelsea are facing Monterrey in the semi finals, Corinthians face off against Egyptian side Al Ahly in their match.
