France do play controlled football, but they are not afraid to push forward and go in for the kill when they need too.
As for the USA Women, they were embroiled in a heavyweight clash against Brazil Women in their quarter final match up. It was the USA Women who struck first, thanks to a Brazil own goal, but then there was much drama to come, with Brazilian superstar Marta hitting a brace and looking home and dry. But deep into injury time, the USA Women found a vital strike through Abby Wambach, to sent the game to injury time. The USA Women had to hang on a bit after they had went down to ten women after defender Rachel Buehler was sent off, giving away the penalty which allowed Brazil women to equalise. The game then went all the way to a penalty shoot out, which was settled when Brazil defender Daiane was the only one to miss, which let Alex Krieger to drive home the final shot to send the USA Women into the quarter final. The USA Women, who are just about the number one ranked team in the world, are not as strong as they have been in the past, but they will be buoyed after watching Germany women crash out of the tournament. After seeing off Brazil, they will now really fancy themselves. The are not playing particularly strong or cohesive football as a unit, but they are digging in there and just about getting the job done. The USA Women have now made it to the semi finals of all FIFA Women’s World Cups, which is an impressive record.
There have been thirteen encounters between France Women and USA Women, but all of them have been international friendlies. They have not come together since 2006, which the USA won 4-1.
