There is a lack of confidence around Villa at the moment, highlighted by their second half performance against Bradford at Villa Park. Millwall aren’t in great form themselves at the moment but will be eying up a good shot at claiming a Premier League scalp in the fourth round.

It is somewhat indicative of Aston Villa’s status at the moment that the Championship side are favourites to take the win. The Lions defeated Preston North End at the Den in the third round, are in somewhat patchy form, having lost three of their last five in the Championship. They have taken just two wins from their last nine in the division and in all competitions have taken just two wins from their last seven. Between the end of September and the start of December, the Lions went on a thirteen match unbeaten streak in the Championship, they have fallen just below that standard though. At home in the Championship they have won half of their games, losing five in the season. Nothing spectacular in either attack or defence, but they could still have enough to take down a defensively weak Villa.
Millwall have gone up against Aston Villa five times before in the FA Cup and the Lions have made it through twice. On both occasions though, it came via a replay. Their home form in the FA Cup though is pretty good, as the Lions have only lost two of their last 17 matches in the competition on home turf. During that run they have taken ten wins, so will present another tough challenge for Villa. They aren’t in the sharpest form at the moment, but the two wins in their last seven games did happen at the Den. Kenny Jackett’s men won’t be terribly phazed by the challenge ahead against Villa. Plenty of long balls forward and precise set play ball into the box are likely to yield big results for the Lions.

Can Aston Villa’s season get any worse? They started dominantly at home against Bradford in the second leg of the League Cup semi final, where they were trying to overcome a 3-1 deficit. Leading 1-0 at half time though, they just didn’t perform in the second half and the confidence just visibly drained from them as the Bantams earned their place in the final. With relegation a big worry for Paul Lambert’s men in the Premier League, extra games will be the last thing that they want, so will their midweek exertions have affected them for their chances in the FA Cup fourth round? The last time they drew each other, it was Millwall who progressed after a replay following a 1-1 draw at Villa Park. However, the Villains have won through on each of the last 10 FA Cup matches in which they have faced teams from lower divisions. So that is a good record, but the worries from their performances against Bradford have to be a concern. They were decent enough at Valley Parade, but they were punished for lack of goal scoring power and they just couldn’t defend set pieces at all.
Millwall will know how to get at Villa and this could be a second massive suckerpunch for the Premier League this week. Villa can produce decent football but there are big defensive holes that need fixing. Villa have also lost the last four of their previous visits to the Den.
