Coventry City (16th) v Watford (19th)

Sunday 2nd May 2010 – 1300hrs

It’s the final day of the season in the Championship, and this seems to be one of those games with little riding on it that may be destined for a draw. Coventry City host Watford at their Ricoh ground with neither team little to play for, both escaping the relegation zone and whose players are probably day-dreaming of warmer climes abroad for a well-earned break.

Coventry City have had a wretched time of late, having gone five home matches without a win but grabbing 1-1 draws with Plymouth Argyle, Sheffield Wednesday and Preston North End respectively. Overall, their home record reads a modest  8-9-5  27/25, and pardon me for a second, but do you remember when Coventry City (along with Arsenal) had been in the top flight of English football the longest? What’s happened since they got relegated? Nothing. As a club, it seems as though it’s okay to get relegated with a view to be content with Championship mid-table mediocrity – come on Cov, you’re better than that! Sorry for that outburst but they’ve drifted for far too long I reckon.

Anyhow, back to the match in hand and visitors Watford seem to have wound down for the season too with no away win in sixteen games – hang on, this run began back in October last year. Luckily, their home form took a turn for the better and saved them from certain relegation. The Hornets away form for the record stands at  3-6-13  21/42, which is disastrous for a side that probably harboured visions of a play-off place this season.

Interestingly, looking at the head-to-head results between these two sides, the last eight out of ten meetings have resulted in over 2.5 goals, and with nothing to play for especially, both sides may look to end the season with a bang so a 2-2 draw may not be out of the question.

Coventry have players like strikers Clinton Morrison (10goals,1assist) and Freddy Eastwood (8goals,2assists) who know their way to goal, along with Watford’s Danny Graham (12goals,6assists), midfielder Tom Cleverley (11goals,5assists) and striker Heidur Helguson (11goals,4assists).
So, final game of the season with nothing to lose, I reckon there’ll be a few goals in this one.
