Third placed Newcastle United head into this interesting encounter with Brentford as heavy favourites to win the game, but this is the sort of game that The Magpies need to win if they’re to be considered legitimate contenders for automatic promotion from the Championship this season.
Newcastle will of course have the ‘12th man’ on their side at their St James’ Park with a noisy crowd behind them, and although they’ve received a couple of speed-bumps on the road, things have generally gone their way so far as was expected under the guidance of manager Rafa Benitez.
Seven wins from their last nine matches overall has placed Newcastle within striking distance of taking the lead at the top of the Championship, and they also possess a very useful and healthy goal difference of +12 which could come into play later in the campaign. Newcastle’s overall home record stands at 3-0-2 11/8.
Visitors Brentford currently sit in 7th place and just two points adrift of the play-off pack heading into this afternoon’s fixture up in the north-east, and although they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last seven matches overall in the Championship, this is expected to be a tough test for The Bees.
Their task is made that little bit tougher as their form on the road so far this campaign has been below-par with a record of 1-1-3 5/7 under their belts to date having registered just the one win on their travels at Brighton in a surprise 2-0 win at the AMEX Stadium.
But defeats at Huddersfield Town, Rotherham United and Wolves perhaps underline their potential weakness on their travels, and this will be tested to the limit at St James Park this afternoon.
