Newcastle United suffered a setback to their plans for automatic promotion back to the Premier League on Boxing Day when they went down to a 1-0 defeat at home to Sheffield Wednesday, so manager Rafa Benitez will be looking for a reaction from his players on Friday night.
Newcastle are at home once again at their St James’ Park for Friday night’s clash with struggling Nottingham Forest who have lost three of their last four matches, while Newcastle United will be desperate to return to winning ways in order to usurp Brighton’s lead at the top of the Championship.
The Magpies’ overall home record stands at 7-0-4 23/12 while they’ve struggled to put the teams in the lower half of the division away with any real conviction to date as their record in these situations stands at a disappointing 2-0-2 5/4.
Visitors Nottingham Forest slumped to another defeat on Boxing Day, this time a 2-1 defeat away at high-flying Huddersfield Town as the pressure mounts upon manager Philippe Montanier. As mentioned earlier, Forest have now lost three of their last four in the Championship with earlier defeats to rivals Derby County and at home to Wolves resulting in the Tricky Trees moving closer to the relegation zone.
Away from home, Forest have lost their last two on their travels on the bounce, and although they did manage wins at Ipswich Town and Barnsley, their overall away record stands at a very disappointing 2-2-8 15/23 with only bottom club Rotherham United (33) conceding more goals on the road than them in the Championship to date.
