Mid-table Reading entertain third placed Ipswich Town at the Madejski Stadium on Friday night as we are served up an intriguing contest between two sides that are interestingly priced up with the bookmakers.
Reading have won just once in their first five Championship matches of the new season which was a 3-1 win away at Brentford just before the international break. However, prior to that win against The Bees, Reading had started their campaign with a defeat at Birmingham City along with draws against Leeds United, Sheffield Wednesday and MK Dons.
The Royals’ home form has started with back-to-back 0-0 stalemates, but looking at the bigger picture, Reading have failed to win on home turf in their last seven matches in the Championship which makes me wonder why the hosts are priced as favourites for this clash.
Visitors Ipswich Town, on the flip side, have lost just once in their first five Championship matches which was a 3-2 loss at home to Brighton before the break. But before that loss, Ipswich Town had put together three wins on the trot with victories over Sheffield Wednesday, Burnley and Preston North End.
Away from home, the Tractor Boys are unbeaten in their opening two matches with a 2-2 draw away at Brentford which was followed up with a 2-1 win at Deepdale against Preston, as their early away record reads a solid 1-1-0 4/3.
It’s true that Ipswich’s away form overall in the Championship hasn’t been great, but I do feel that Mick McCarthy’s men have the ability to at least avoid defeat here tonight. This could end up a 1-1 draw, in which case my pick will be a winner.
