Brighton & Hove Albion earned what could be a valuable point away at Derby County on the opening day of the new Championship season on the weekend as the two sides failed to break the deadlock in a 0-0 stalemate at the iPro Stadium.
Brighton now return to their AMEX Stadium to prepare for the visit of League Two side Colchester United who were relegated at the end of last season from League One and now need to dust themselves off for this new campaign in the fourth tier.
The Seagulls have lost just once in their last 12 matches on home turf (which was a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in their last warm-up game before the start of the season), so they’ll be confident of securing their passage through to the second round, particularly with the likes of Murray, Baldock and Hemed in their forward line.
Colchester United also drew their opening game of the League Two season with a 1-1 draw away at Hartlepool United which should be considered a reasonable result for the Essex-based outfit, as they come to terms with life in the English fourth tier.
The U’s have won just once though from their last 10 matches overall which was a pre-season friendly 4-1 win away at Chelmsford City, and they do not have happy memories of their participation in the League Cup, especially away from home!
Just two away wins from their last 10 matches on the road (at Gillingham and Hereford United) have been their meagre returns thus far in this competition, and their average away form could come under severe scrutiny again this evening.
