Group G sees a straight head-to-head clash between tonight’s hosts Celta Vigo and visitors Standard Liege for the right to join clear leaders of the group, Ajax, into the knock-out stages of the Europa League.
Both Celta Vigo and Standard Liege find themselves on five points apiece with one win and two draws to their names respectively; but Celta Vigo possess home advantage at their Estadio de Balaídos where they’ve won their last four league matches in La Liga on the trot.
Celta’s home form has therefore been impressive in recent times and this includes a 4-3 win over mighty Barcelona along with victories gained against Sporting Gijon, Deportivo and Valencia. In the Europa League, Celta have also beaten Panathinaikos and earned a draw against Ajax.
Onto Standard Liege and they drew with tonight’s opponents Celta Vigo in the opening group match 1-1, and then drew at home with Panthinaikos before beating the Greek side 3-0 in a thumping victory away from home.
However, Standard are likely to face much tougher opposition this evening particularly as they have to travel to Spain on the back of three defeats away from home from their last four outings in all competitions.
Defeats at Gent, Oostende and Mechelen in the Jupiler League isn’t great preparation for their trip to Celta Vigo, and they could well struggle again on Thursday night away from their Stade Maurice Dufrasne where they’ve won their last two matches on the trot.
I’ll therefore back Celta Vigo to earn a vital group win here.
