Roma Preview – Can Roma catch up?

Roma were handed defeat on the opening game of the group stage in this season’s Europa League competition as they faltered to a 2-1 loss away from home at Ludogorets but Jose Mourinho’s side managed to bounce back on Match Day 2 with a 3-0 home win over hapless Finnish club, HJK, to remain in the hunt for a possible place in the knockout rounds of this competition a little later on.

Since that opening loss to Ludogorets, Roma have picked up three wins from their subsequent four matches overall in all competitions, recording wins against the aforementioned HJK, along with domestic Serie A victories over Empoli and most impressive of all, a 2-1 win on the road at Inter Milan.

This last result in particular should give the hosts plenty of confidence as they head into Match Day 3 against Real Betis looking for all three points from this encounter, while the bigger picture also looks promising for Roma as they have lost just three out of their last 13 matches overall in all competitions.

On the Europa League stage, Roma have been handed just three defeats out of their last 16 ties overall, all of which were away from home, while also picking up 11 wins in the process, and form on home soil at their Stadio Olimpico has been even more impressive as the Italian hosts are unbeaten in their last 13 ties, winning nine of these games.

Mourinho looks set to be without defender Rick Karsdop as well as midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum who are both sidelined with injuries.

Real Betis Preview – Can Real Betis hold onto top spot?

The Spanish visitors currently sit top of Group C with the maximum haul of six points from their opening two games in the group stage following back to back victories against HJK 2-0 away from home and a 3-2 home win against Bulgarian outfit, Ludogorets, to place the Spanish club in a strong position ahead of these Match Day 3 fixtures.

Indeed, Real Betis have won eight out of their last 10 matches in all competitions, five of which were achieved in the domestic top flight with La Liga wins against Elche, Mallorca, Osasuna, Villarreal and Girona respectively, along with winning their opening two games on the trot in the Europa League as well.

Overall form in this competition has been reasonable enough as the visitors have lost just three of their last 12 ties overall, but two of these three defeats were incurred away from home with losses handed to them by the likes of Bayer Leverkusen and Celtic in last season’s Europa League campaign.

Results on the road though have also been pretty steady where Real Betis have been concerned as the visitors have suffered just two defeats from their last 12 outings on the road at this level, while also picking up six wins and four draws in the process, so they are no pushovers at this level.

Real Betis look likely to be without the services of defender Youssouf Sabaly, midfielder Camarasa and forward Juanmi, the latter scoring two goals in his four league appearances to date, as the visitors prepare for what is arguably their biggest test yet so far in the group stage on Thursday night.
