By their standards, Everton ended up with a below-par season as they finished mid-table in the Premier League after having achieved a creditable fifth place finish the season before.
This afternoon, Premier League football returns to our screens, and a new season full of hope and ambitions are there for every team, not least of all Everton. The Toffees start their new campaign with a home match against Premier League newsboys Watford at Goodison Park and the hosts are expected to put in a much better showing this time around.
Manager Roberto Martinez will be keen to rally his troops to re-discover their previous season’s form and with a useful midfield consisting of Barkley, Pienaar, Barry and Cleverly, they should provide the ammunition for Lukaku, Mirallas and Naismith up front.
Watford finally achieved promotion back up to the English top flight after many seasons scrabbling around in the Championship. The fact that they achieved promotion amidst managerial upheaval as well during last season is even more impressive, but the hard work now begins for real.
In order to survive their return to the Premier League, Watford must tighten up at the back despite possessing some very useful attacking players such as Behram and Abdi in midfield along with the attacking trio of Deeney, Forestieri and Vydra. Clean sheets away from home will be vital to Watford’s success this term.
And thus is where I feel Watford will come unstuck in this opening fixture; Goodison Park is a tough ground to keep a clean sheet, and I fancy the hosts Everton to get their season off to a good start with perhaps a 1-0 win here.
