There have been many changes at Old Trafford following the end of a long and ultimately disappointing campaign which saw Manchester United finish in 5th place, only just securing a Europa League spot, and former manager Louis van Gaal sacked.
United have rung in the changes with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho installed as the new leader who has been tasked with bringing back the flowing, attacking brand of football that was synonomous with United under Sir Alex Ferguson – but Mourinho will need to change his defensive ways if they’re to do so.
In his defence though, the Red Devils have made some big purchases in the shape of prolific PSG striker Ibrahimovic, Mkhitarayan (from Borussia Dortmund), Bailly (from Villarreal) and Pogba (who United brought back from Juventus).
Visitors Southampton were held to a 1-1 draw by Watford in last weekend’s season opener at St Mary’s Stadium, and they now face a difficult trip to Old Trafford despite gaining some momentum against United in recent visits – but dare I say that these results coincided with Ferguson’s retirement?
Southampton are expected to struggle this term compared to last as two of their most influential players have since departed the south coast – Mane and Pelle have moved on, so the goals will now need to come from other sources.
Saints should more than hold their own at home, particularly against the teams around them in the division, but I do wonder about their firepower when coming up against the top six teams in the Premier League.
