Melbourne City have emerged out from the shadows of their crosstown rivals Melbourne Victory as the dominant sector of the city in recent times as they’ve registered recent local derby wins over Victory in the league and the FFA Cup, the latter being a particularly spiteful and brutal affair.

Visitors Adelaide United head into Friday night’s encounter on the back of three A-League matches without a win as they’ve fallen to defeats against Western Sydney Wanderers and Melbourne Victory as well as drawing 1-1 with Newcastle Jets.
That point against Newcastle Jets has been Adelaide’s only away match in this new Australian season, and although they managed a 2-0 win at Melbourne City towards the end of their last campaign back in April, City have boosted their ranks somewhat since then.
But eleven away matches without defeat will provide the visitors with a fair amount of confidence as they’ve strung together some very useful results on the road – but all good runs come to an end sometime and so I’ll back Melbourne City for the points here.
