After a miserable start to the season, Newcastle United (manager, players and fans alike) can maybe start dreaming of Premier League survival having won three of their last five matches in the English top flight.
Wins over Bournemouth, Liverpool and Tottenham are certainly encouraging results for The Magpies who have spent most of the season in the bottom three of the Premier League, but these recent results have seen them lift up into the comparative heady heights of 15th place!
Newcastle now have an excellent chance of putting further daylight between themselves and the bottom three here this evening when they take on Aston Villa who currently sit rock-bottom of the division with just six points to their name.
Newcastle’s home record stands at 2-3-3 13/12 and they’ve lost just once in their last five at St James’ Park.
Onto Aston Villa, and the west midlands club crashed to a third defeat in four matches in the Premier league when they were beaten 2-0 at Villa Park by an irrepressible Arsenal outfit to condemn The Villans to a 12th defeat so far this season.
Recent defeats to Everton, Watford and Arsenal will have done nothing for their confidence, and even a trip to Newcastle United is now filled with trepidation for Villa who have gained just four points out of a possible 24 on offer on their travels – and this is a better record than at Villa Park!
Since their first away win of the season at Bournemouth, Aston Villa have since gone seven matches without an away win and indeed their history on the road in the Premier League is a poor one in recent times as they’ve won just three games from their last 19 away matches.
Whilst I’m sorely tempted to just back Newcastle for the straight win, I do advise giving the quarter-ball on The Magpies as I can’t completely rule out the possibility of the draw here.
