Santos earned a valuable point away at Flamengo last weekend when they held the hosts to a 2-2 draw which was a promising follow-up to the previous weekend’s 2-0 home win over Joinville.
Santos now return to their home ground tonight when they host bottom club Coritiba as they look to continue their recent form and pull away from the bottom four clubs in the Brazilian top flight. The hosts’ overall home record is also pretty steady as it currently stands at 4-2-1 12/7 having won three of their last four on home turf.
Recent wins over second placed Corinthians as well as wins over Figueirense and Joinville have kept Santos out of the relegation zone for the time being, and they’ll be keen to assert their authority here tonight against weaker opposition.
Onto Coritiba now, and they head into tonight’s clash against Santos on the back of seven Serie A matches without a win having been involved in a spate of draws. Five draws, along with two defeats have resulted in the visitors occupying bottom spot in the division, while their form on the road has been well below-par.
Coritiba have an overall away record of 0-2-6 4/14 to their name, and they’ve recently been dealt defeats at Internacional, Atletico Mineiro and Sao Paulo. But scoring goals on their travels has been one of their main problems as they’ve failed to hit the back of the net on five occasions to date.
Throw in just one clean sheet on the road and you can see why Coritiba are bottom of the pile going into this weekend’s round.
Therefore, I’ll back Santos here and give the three-quarter ball as they should win this by at least one goal in perhaps a 2-0 win.
