Seattle Sounders will no doubt be looking to stretch their lead at the top of the Western Conference on Saturday afternoon when they host lowly San Jose Earthquakes at CenturyLink Field.
Seattle are currently enjoying a three-point cushion over second placed Vancouver Whitecaps ahead of today’s home encounter, and with last weekend’s convincing 3-0 home win over FC Dallas behind them, they look a good bet to build upon their impressive home record here today.
The Sounders’ overall home record stands at 6-1-1 13/4 with a solid defensive unit contributing to their success so far this season. Six of their eight home matches have seen them keep a clean sheet, while they’ve also won their last three on home turf on the trot with wins over Colorado Rapids, New York Red Bulls and of course FC Dallas.
Forwards Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins are the stand-out potential anytime goalscorer here for the hosts.
Visitors San Jose Earthquakes received a real scare in their midweek US Open Cup match with USL outfit Sacramento Republic as the match ended 2-2 at the end of the ninety minutes. San Jose eventually got the job done but had to endure a penalty shoot-out to progress to the next round.
This may well have drained the energy levels ahead of their trip to Seattle, while just one win from their last five will also have them on red alert for this difficult encounter. Their away record stands at 2-2-4 8/12 and their only recent win on the road was at 7th placed Houston Dynamo back in early May.
Manager Mark Watson also has a number of first team players unavailable through injury for this clash such as Francis, Lenhart, Sherrad and Goodson all rated doubtful for this match.
In short, the Sounders have been solid at home this season and I can’t see any reason not to back them here; could be perhaps a 2-1 win for the hosts.
