Southampton have a great chance of making it four straight Premier League wins on the trot when they play host to Crystal Palace at their St Mary’s Stadium in this last match of the English top flight season.
Saints could still theoretically claim the Europa League spot off Manchester United if they slip up at home against fellow south coast side Bournemouth, but it does appear that Southampton might just have blown their chances.
Nevertheless, having gained recent wins over Aston Villa, Manchester City and Tottenham, Southampton will fancy their chances of further adding to their win tally in their current home record of 10-3-5 35/21 here this afternoon.
Visitors Crystal Palace enjoyed a great run of form in the early stages of the season as they won five of their first eight Premier League matches, but The Eagles steadily spiralled in a downwards trajectory thereafter, and they have drifted down to 14th place in the league ladder.
In all honesty, Crystal Palace have probably found their true position in the scheme of things in the English top flight, too good to go down, but not enough quality to sustain a serious challenge for a european spot.
Palace’s away record stands at 5-6-7 19/24 and they’re without an away win from their last ten on their travels, which is another indication as to why they find themselves in the bottom half of the division.
Southampton still have a sniff of a possible european spot while Palace have nothing to play for, so I’ll back Saints to cover the -1 asian line here in what could perhaps be a 2-0 win for the hosts.
