Spartak Trnava achieved their goal of avoiding defeat in last week’s first leg of this second round Europa League qualifier as they held Armenian side Shirak Gyumri to a 1-1 draw, and they now seemingly have the upper hand ahead of this second leg in Slovakia.
Sparta Trnava also extended their unbeaten run to five matches in all competitions with that draw, having previously progressed to this second round of the Europa League with a first round 6-0 thrashing of Hibernians on aggregate.
The hosts have also won seven of their last eight at their Štadión Antona Malatinského so they will be confident that they can ensure their passage through to the third round qualification round this evening on home turf.
Visitors Shirak Gyumri head into this second leg on the back of some pretty decent form overall as they’ve lost just once in their last 12 matches overall, which was a 1-0 defeat away to Georgian side Dila in the first leg of the first round qualifiers in this season’s Europa League.
However, in the second leg, they only just made it through as they went to penalties, eventually winning 4-1 in the penalty shoot-out. Their progression in this competition may also be hindered by the fact that they’ve lost eight of their last nine away matches in the Europa League.
Five away defeats on the trot in earlier appearances on their travels at this level suggests they could be in for a long evening in Slovakia as they’ve scored just one goal and conceded 11 in reply in their last five on the road in this competition.
