The Dancing With the Stars season in Ireland drew to a close over the weekend with Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony scooping up the Glitterball in a spectacular finale. He managed to win the famous trophy even though he had received a lower score from the judging panel than either of his opponents in the finale, Aoibhin Garrihy and Denise McCormack.

The issue was that both of the actresses lost out in the public vote, leaving O’Mahoney to sweep the title with his partner Valeria. Aidan had been the “dark horse” of the entire series but he stepped up to the plate in the three-dance performance showdown in the finale to land the title.

But because of the disappointments for punters having backed either of the losing finalists, Paddy Power decided to shell out €8,000 in free bets for customers who bet on LOSING finalists Aoibhin Garrihy and Denise McCormack.

Former Fair City star Aoibhin Garrihy lost out after going into the final as the bookies favourite, trading at even money with Paddy Power heading into the finale. O’Mahony had odds of 2/1 going in with Denise McCormack going into the final with odds at 5/2.

Féilim Mac An Iomaire, a spokesperson for Paddy Power, said: “The fleet-footed baller from Kerry may have won the public vote but a number of our customers felt aggrieved having lost out despite backing the acts who were adjudged to have performed best on the night.

Therefore we feel that the only fair thing to do is to give them back their hard earned which will hopefully put the pep back in their step.”
