Who will land the coveted role as the 13th Doctor Who? The race is on to succeed Peter Capaldi in the famous role. Ladbrokes reported this week that there was a flurry of action coming on Kris Marshall taking over the role and that was all sparked by the actor announcing that he is retiring from his popular role in Death In Paradise.
The former My Family star took such a rapid backing that he was cut from 25/1 into 3/1 favourite in the Next Doctor Who betting market. Despite the action that has come in for him, and his comic role in the sitcom should see him offer that quirky humour to the role of the Doctor, in terms of the number of actual bets received, no-one has received more than Olivia Colman to break some new ground and be the first female in the lead role.
There has apparently been clues to Colman taking over the role. The Broadchurch actress who won a Golden Globe for her role in the Dorset-based crime show has taken a third of all bets in the Next Doctor Who betting market. Also, Broadchurch was written by Chris Chibnall, who is the new full time writer for the next Doctor Who series. The BBC have also dropped a teaser featuring Time Lady Missy.
Filing for the new season of Doctor Who begins in the summer, so we will probably find out soon who gets the starring role. Other contenders include Maxine Peake if the producers are going to go with a female lead and skip Colman, while James Bond star Ben Whishaw and IT Crowd star Richard Ayoade are in the mix at longer prices.
