Sports Personality of the Year betting 2022 got a little more interesting this week. That’s because of the red-hot form of England batsman Jonny Bairstow.

YJB has been trimmed into a short as 20/1 by some bookmakers in the Sports Personality of the Year betting 2022.

The movement was a response to yet another brilliant innings from him, as he helped England beat India at Edgbaston.

Bairstow’s batting brilliance

Since Brendon McCullum was installed as the new coach and Ben Stokes was handed the captaincy, England’s Test cricket team have looked like a different beast.

After a couple of years in the doldrums, suddenly England has shaken up the Test format by playing an incredible attacking style.

In each of their last four matches, they have produced a successful chase of at least 275.

They posted a 3-0 series win over New Zealand, then they chased down a stunning 378 to beat India. It was a record chase by England in the fourth innings.

The biggest benefactor of the new changes to the England set-up appears to be Jonny Bairstow. He has tallied up 589 runs in his last five innings.

Bairstow moved in from around 50/1 to 20/1 for Sports Personality of the Year betting 2022 on Tuesday.

At the time of writing there is a better 25/1 on Bairstow at Bet365* (odds recorded at 20:40 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Bet365).

O’Sullivan still heads the market

At the head of the current SPOTY 2022 betting market is Ronnie O’Sullivan. The Rocket won this year’s World Snooker Championship for the seventh time in his career.

That put him level with Stephen Hendry in the modern era. O’Sullivan also becomes the oldest World Champion in the history of the tournament.

O’Sullivan was nominated in 2020 for the SPOTY Award but didn’t crack the top three.

He is the current 11/4 favourite* (odds recorded at 20:40 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Bet365).

Our betting prediction:
Tyson Fury
8/1

Other SPOTY 2022 Contenders

Tyson Fury and Harry Kane are there as current joint 8/1 second-favourites* (odds recorded at 20:40 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Bet365).

Fury beat Dillian Whyte by a knockout at Wembley in the summer before announcing his retirement undefeated.

It wasn’t too long after that he announced that he was coming back. Will he fight again in 2022?

Harry Kane’s chances are probably going to hang on delivering the goals for England at the 2022 World Cup.

But the tournament doesn’t start until November. The Sports Personality of the Year Awards is probably going to be held close to, or before the conclusion of this year’s World Cup.

Norrie is one to watch

Tennis player Cameron Norrie came up with an epic five-set victory over David Goffin in the Wimbledon Quarter Finals on Tuesday.

That’s the first time in a Slam Semi Final for the Brit, where he will face reigning champion, Novak Djokovic.

If Norrie was to somehow go all the way and lift the Wimbledon title, he would be tough to beat for the Sports Personality of the Year Award 2022.

Following his Quarter Final success, Norrie had been trimmed into a short as 12/1 with some bookies but can be snapped up at a better 20/1* (odds recorded at 20:40 GMT on July 5th, 2022 at Bet365).

Emma Raducanu won the 2021 SPOTY Award after her US Open title.

Who could make a move in 2022?

Dina Asher-Smith has the World Championships coming up in the summer. The 100m and 200m are absolutely stacked at the moment with the likes of Elaine Thompson-Herah, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Shericka Jackson and Sha’Carri Richardson around.

If Asher-Smith were to take gold, particularly in the 100m in Oregon, a top-three at the SPOTY Awards wouldn’t be out of the question.

Boxer Savannah Marshall gets her shot against rival Clarissa Shield in September, which will see a fight for the undisputed middleweight crown. Both fighters are undefeated.

Then there is England’s record goalscorer Ellen White who surely deserves some recognition. A strong Euro 2022 campaign by the Man City forward, could put her in the picture. More so if the Lionesses win the tournament.
