Emma Raducanu

It is hard to argue with Emma Raducanu being such a strong player at the head of this market. Out of nowhere, she has become one of the biggest names in British sport this year.

That was after her stunning US Open tennis title on what was just her second Grand Slam appearance, and her debut at Flushing Meadows.

She toppled Canada’s Leylah Fernandez to get the crown.

Raducanu won the Grand Slam without dropping a set, became the youngest Grand Slam champion since 2004 and not only that, Raducanu created massive history by being the first-ever qualifier to win a Grand Slam title in the Open era.

Granted it was a big one, but is that one title enough to get her the support of the British public to be crowned 2021 SPOTY winner?

Tom Daley

British diver Tom Daley finally landed the dream result of getting an Olympic Gold Medal. He paired up with Matty Lee to win the synchronised 10m platform event in Tokyo this year.

That was a crowning moment in a long career that Daley has had.

Seeing his complete joy at winning is one of the most enduring and lasting memories of the 2021 sporting calendar.

He was plastered all over the media in the summer when he took the crown.

The 27-year-old Olympian could potentially give Raducanu a run for her money in the popularity stakes.

Daley is a 10/1 second favourite in 2021 SPOTY betting* (odds recorded at 16:52 GMT on December 13th, 2021 at Bet365).

Tyson Fury

After completing his trilogy against Deontay Wilder this year, in what was another memorial battle between the two, Fury remains undefeated.

The heavyweight boxing champion is right on top of his game at the moment.

But defending his crown against Wilder probably isn’t enough to get him the Spoty 2021 award.

If there had been that huge unification fight with Anthony Joshua before it all fell apart, then that could have put Fury right up there.

Fury could still work his way next year to holding all of the belts in the heavyweight division.

If that happens, he’d probably be a 2022 Spoty front runner.

Fury is a 33/1 shot this year for the Sports Personality of the Year award* (odds recorded at 16:52 GMT on December 13th, 2021 at Bet365).

Adam Peaty

Unfortunately Olympians never quite get the recognition that they deserve.

Adam Peaty is one of Britain’s greatest Olympians as he defended his 100m breaststroke gold at this year’s Games.

He was the first British swimmer to ever successfully defend a gold.

With him picking up team medals in the pool as well, including in the mixed medley relay, Peaty has had a truly outstanding 2021.

Peaty though never even got the same attention in the media as Daley did, which leaves him a long shot for the SPOTY award.

Peaty is at 100/1* (odds recorded at 16:52 GMT on December 13th, 2021 at Bet365).

Sarah Storey

Talking of great British Olympians, there is Sarah Storey as well.

This year she got her hands on her 17th Paralympic gold in what has been an astonishing career for the cyclist.

Storey has 28 Paralympic medals to her name in total. She has been an inspiration and phenomenon and is fully deserving of her place on the shortlist.

While Storey is a big outsider for the main prize, seeing her get into the top three isn’t a bad shout at 10/1 each-way* (odds recorded at 16:52 GMT on December 13th, 2021 at Bet365).

Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling was a big part of England’s progress to the final of the European Championships in the summer.

He tallied up three goals in the campaign and he made the UEFA team of the tournament as well.

Sterling collected another Premier League title with Manchester City as well during the year.

A title win at Euro 2020 probably would have given him a lift towards a SPOTY title, but it’s hard to see him getting it.

Sterling is a big 150/1 outsider for this year’s SPOTY betting* (odds recorded at 16:52 GMT on December 13th, 2021 at Bet365).
