Newcastle v Bordeaux Betting Preview
The only matter left to settle here for the Magpies is whether they finish first or second. Only a win will see them leapfrog the French side into top spot. Anything else and they will have to settle for second as they have already qualified. So will the Premier League side push hard for this one or try to keep something in reserve for Premier League action. Regardless, the Magpies have shown quite well with under-strength sides in Europe this season and because Bordeaux only need a point, it could be a tight affair on Thursday night.

Newcastle v Bordeaux Recommended Bet:
The Magpies go as underdogs on this one, even though they beat the French outfit 3-0 back on home soil. The fact that they are away here, combined with poor form in the Premier League, and the fact that both sides would be happy enough with a point, puts Newcastle behind with the bookies. The Magpies have drawn all three of their European away matches this season and they are without a win in four on the road now. So it suggests that they may be good enough for a draw really. When they beat Bordeaux earlier in the group, they became the first side to beat the French outfit this season and that is the only defeat that Bordeaux have had in seven matches this season in Europe. As for Newcastle’s record against French sides, there is a somewhat disappointing W1 D2 L3 record on French soil for them. They have played over there since 2004 though, when they won 4-0 at FC Sochaux-Montbeliard. This is going to be a tough match for Newcastle, if Bordeaux are at full strength and keen to hold on to a point. Newcastle have lost just one of their last fifteen European matches, winning 10 and drawing four. In the last five European matches, Newcastle have kept three clean sheets.

Bordeaux have been good, especially at the back, facing fewer shots than any other side in the tournament so far (just eight!). Bordeaux have won their last eight European home matches in a row now and they are on an unbeaten stretch of 11. That is pretty strong reading and they have won all three of their home games in Europe this season, keeping clean sheets in the last two. The French side do only need a point but interestingly their record against English sides is not good at all. They have a W0 D2 L7 record against English team and a W0 D2 L2 home record against opponents from England. So is that going to be enough to have Newcastle avoid defeat? They are a top six side in the French Ligue 1 and should be good enough for a draw here under the circumstances.
