Atletico Madrid’s six-game unbeaten run in the Champions League came to an end last week when they were edged out in a 2-1 defeat away at Spanish champions Barcelona in the first leg of this all-Spanish quarter-final.
However, tonight’s hosts won’t be daunted by their illustrious opponents this evening as they are more than capable of holding their own at this level and indeed have registered some impressive wins in recent times on home turf against the likes of Astana 4-0, Galatasaray 2-0 and won a penalty shoot-out over Dutch side PSV.
In addition, Atletico Madrid have failed to score just once in their last nine home games at their Estadio Vicente Calderón and with forwards such as Griezmann and Torres up front along with midfielders Carrasco, Saul and Koke, they have every chance of scoring here this evening.
Visitors Barcelona have one foot in the semi-finals already having taken a 2-1 lead in the first leg at the Nou Camp, but they’ll need to be wary of the hosts Atletico Madrid this evening as the job isn’t complete just yet.
Barca are unbeaten in their last ten Champions League matches which is an impressive feat at this level, and they’ve won their last three on the trot with wins over Arsenal (2-0 away and 3-1 at home) as well as Atletico Madrid last week.
They’ve suffered just one defeat from their last ten away matches too, but what is interesting is that they’ve scored in each of their last 11 away matches in the Champions League and with players like Suarez, Messi and Neymar up front, they are very capable of extending this run to 12 tonight.
