Tuesday night brings us Matchday 3 of this season’s Champions League group stage and features this upcoming clash in Group A between English Premier League side, Liverpool, and their Scottish Premiership counterparts, Rangers, in what is being dubbed as the ‘Battle of Britain’ when the two teams meet on merseyside at Anfield

Liverpool Preview – Can Reds maintain top two spot?

An opening heavy 4-1 thrashing away from home at the hands of Napoli certainly wasn’t part of Liverpool’s or Jurgen Klopp’s plans prior to the start of the group stages of this season’s Champions League competition but The Reds found themselves being very much second best in Italy to start their campaign off in disappointing fashion.

However, Liverpool regained their form by beating Dutch Eredivisie side, Ajax, 2-1 at Anfield on Matchday 2 and the hosts will be looking for more of the same when they entertain Rangers at home on Tuesday night but recent domestic results have cast a usually potential straightforward win for the hosts in recent times.

Liverpool have managed to pick up just two wins out of their opening seven games of this new Premier League season and find themselves sitting in 9th place and already a significant 11 points adrift of the current league leaders, Arsenal, so Jurgen Klopp will be desperate for his side to kick-start their season with a win over Rangers here.

Liverpool’s two victories came in the form of wins against Bournemouth 9-0 and Newcastle United 2-1, both of which were at Anfield, but the hosts have also slipped to a 2-1 loss away from home at Manchester United along with being held to four draws as well, which has contributed to the hosts’ slow and sluggish start to this new term.

Draws with Fulham, Crystal Palace, Everton and Brighton give Rangers an outside chance of getting something from this fixture, although it may be more realistic that the visitors may at least frustrate their hosts and keep the scores close here, especially as Liverpool have won just three of their last 10 matches in all competitions.

Klopp is expected to be without Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate, who join the likes of Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the treatment room with knee injuries.

Rangers Preview – Can ‘Gers frustrate their hosts?

Rangers will head into this Matchday 3 fixture at Anfield looking to avoid a third successive defeat on the trot in Group A following defeats to Ajax 4-0 away from home and a 3-0 loss on home soil at Ibrox to Napoli, which has left the Scottish outfit sitting bottom of the group and pointless after the opening two games of the group stage.

Rangers had also been hammered 4-0 by their fierce rivals, Celtic, in the Scottish Premiership but recent back to back wins against Dundee United and Hearts have at least restored some confidence and belief back into the Rangers squad and could prove to be a timely boost ahead of this tough looking trip to Anfield on Matchday 3.

The Scottish visitors progressed through the qualifying rounds of this season’s Champions League to reach the group stage by recording wins against Belgian club, Union St-Gilloise, 3-2 on aggregate and then recording an impressive 3-2 win on aggregate against Dutch outfit, PSV, to claim a financially lucrative spot in the group stage of the competition.

Although Rangers have also managed to pick up just one win from their last 14 ties on the road at this level, ‘Gers have lost by 3 goals or more in just two of these 14 games, losing 3-0 at Valencia and the recent 4-0 mauling at the hands of Ajax, but the visitors are capable of at least covering the +2.75 asian handicap in this clash with Liverpool.

Rangers manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, will be without midfielder James Sands along with John Souttar, Tom Lawrence, Jon McLaughlin and Kemar Roofe who all look unlikely to be fit for this encounter at Anfield.

Key Facts – Liverpool v Rangers Tip

  • Liverpool have won just 3 of their last 10 matches in all competitions
  • Rangers have lost by 3 goals or more in just 2 of their last 14 away ties in the CL
  • Rangers beat Liverpool 1-0 in a friendly in the only previous meeting 11 years ago

Liverpool should run out easy winners here against Rangers but recent results suggest Klopp has yet to enjoy the fruits of their new signings who continue to try and integrate into the squad, and the hosts have found wins hard to come by as a result so far. Rangers look to be inferior in terms of quality but they’ll be up for this game and could keep the scores close on merseyside on Tuesday night.
