RB Leipzig Preview – Can Leipzig get off the mark?

It’s been a poor and disappointing start to this new Champions League campaign for German hosts, RB Leipzig, as the home side have suffered defeats in each of their opening two games of the group stage, losing 4-1 at home to Shakhtar Donetsk on Matchday 1 before falling to a 2-0 defeat on the road at Real Madrid, so they could really do with a win here.

However, this may be easier said than done as RB Leipzig have managed to collect just four wins out of their last 13 matches overall in all competitions, three of which were achieved in the domestic Bundesliga but having also lost seven games within this period, this upcoming Champions League tie against Celtic holds no guarantees for Marco Rose’s side.

Results on the Champions League front have been even worse for RB Leipzig as the hosts have registered just two victories out of their last 10 matches overall, one of which was a 2-1 home win against Manchester City last season but with seven defeats also included in these last 10 ties, the German hosts look to have their work cut out here.

Leipzig have also won just one of their last five Champions League ties at home as well, which includes three defeats, and their last meeting with their Scottish visitors, Celtic, in the Europa League back in 2018 saw honours even with a win for both sides in the two-legged affair.

Rose will be without the services of Lukas Klostermann, Konrad Laimer, Dani Olmo and Yussuf Poulsen for this tie, as the hosts look to make the most of home advantage here, and gain a foothold in Group F with a win on Wednesday night.

Celtic Preview – Can Buoys hold their own?

Celtic were handed a heavy 3-0 loss at home to Real Madrid on Matchday 1 which wasn’t the sort of start that Australian manager, Ange Postecoglou, had in mind for his side as they embark upon this group stage in Group F although his side did produce a positive reaction by picking up a useful point by way of a 1-1 draw away from home at Shakhtar Donetsk on Matchday 2.

However, Celtic then also slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat away from home at St Mirren in the domestic Premiership before setting the record straight on the weekend when they registered a welcome three-point haul thanks to a 2-1 home win against Motherwell, which Celtic will be hoping will be a springboard to success on the European front.

Having lost just twice in their last 22 matches though overall in all competitions, Celtic look to have a decent chance of gaining a result of some sort in Germany on Wednesday night especially as the visitors have registered 14 wins within this period as well, while also losing just one of their previous 15 outings on the road.

Celtic have picked up nine wins on the road during this time, while results away from home at Champions League level have been reasonable enough as The Buoys have lost just two of their last eight away ties in this elite European competition, keeping three clean sheets in the process as well.

Postecoglou is expected to be without defender Carl Starfelt and midfielder Yosuke Ideguchi for this trip to Germany on Wednesday night, while midfielder Jamie McCarthy is struggling with illness and is rated as doubtful for this clash.

  • RB Leipzig have registered just 2 victories out of their last 10 CL ties overall
  • RB Leipzig have also won just 1 of their last 5 CL ties at home as well
  • Celtic have lost just 2 of their last 8 away ties in the CL

Both RB Leipzig and Celtic have struggled in the early stages of this group stage but both teams will be eyeing off a potential three points here as both clubs will fancy their chances of a result in this tie, and looking to stay in touch with the two leading clubs; however, Celtic look capable of frustrating their hosts who have produced inconsistent results heading into this encounter.
