Chelsea Preview – Can Blues open account in Champions League?

It’s still early days of course, but new Chelsea manager, Graham Potter, has made a promising start to his tenure at Stamford Bridge as he helped steer his Chelsea outfit to their first point in this season’s Champions League campaign following a 1-1 draw at home with Salzburg, before his team registered an opening win for Potter in the Premier League on the weekend with a 2-1 win away from home at Crystal Palace.

Now, Potter will be setting his sights on his first Champions league win with Chelsea on Wednesday night when The Blues take on AC Milan with recent results being quite inconsistent under former coach, Thomas Tuchel, as Chelsea have won just three of their last eight matches in all competitions.

All three wins came on the domestic front in the Premier League with victories collected against Leicester City, West Ham and Crystal Palace, but the hosts had also slipped to defeats to Leeds United, Southampton and Dinamo Zagreb – the latter being a 1-0 loss away from home on Matchday 1 of the Champions League.

However, overall results on the Champions League stage have been pretty encouraging as the London club have lost just two of their last 10 ties overall and have also picked up a total of six wins in the process as well, while losing just once in their last seven home ties and picking up five wins on home soil during this period too.

Potter may have to do without midfielder N’Golo Kante (lacking match fitness) and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy (knee injury) for this home tie which the hosts will be desperate to win, while Marc Cucurella and Jorginho are rated as doubtful for this encounter.

AC Milan Preview – Can AC Milan hold off challenge?

With four points from their opening two games of the group stage of this season’s Champions League, Wednesday’s visitors, AC Milan, sit top of Group E where the Italian club will be looking to maintain when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in this vital Matchday 3 clash.

AC Milan have produced a consistent sequence of results of late in all competitions as the Serie A side have suffered just the one defeat out of their last 13 matches overall, which came in the form of a 2-1 loss at home to Napoli in the Italian top flight, but the visitors have also collected nine wins within these last 13 matches as well.

The visitors have made a solid start then in Group E, picking up a point in a 1-1 draw away from home at Salzburg before posting a convincing 3-1 home win against Dinamo Zagreb on Matchday 2, but recent results at Champions League level have been less convincing, as Chelsea have recorded just two wins out of their last 15 ties in this competition.

Wins against Atletico Madrid and Dinamo Zagreb have been swamped by a total of six defeats within this sequence also, and the visitors face another tough assignment against a Chelsea side who are keen to get going in this season’s competition on Wednesday night.

AC Milan have also struggled to record wins on the road at Champions League level as the visitors have claimed just four victories out of the previous 19 outings on their travels and this trip to London doesn’t look any easier for Stefano Pioli’s side as they look to at least avoid defeat here.

Pioli has numerous missing personnel for this upcoming Champions League tie as no fewer than seven players are on the injury list including striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, while Junior Messias is a doubt with a thigh injury and Divock Origi has a muscle injury.
