Borussia Dortmund return to their Signal-Iduna-Park for their Champions League round of 16 second leg against Portuguese club Benfica as the hosts look to overhaul a 1-0 deficit on home turf to progress through to the quarter-finals.
The German club appear to be in good shape ahead of this important european tie following their narrow 1-0 loss in Lisbon back in mid-February as they’ve since registered three Bundesliga wins on the trot which has lifted them up into third place on the domestic league ladder.
Wins over Wolfsburg 3-0, Freiburg 3-0 and Bayer Leverkusen 6-2 also show the hosts have their goalscoring boots on, with striker and leading goalscorer Patrick Aubameyang (21 goals) further adding to his excellent goalscoring tally.
Visitors Benfica are at the halfway stage of their Champions League tie with Borussia Dortmund and everything’s gone according to plan so far for the Portuguese outfit as they achieved what they set out to do in Lisbon in the first leg.
However, they now face a tricky trip over to Dortmund for this crucial second leg knowing that they face a free-scoring Dortmund side who will be gunning for victory this evening. But Benfica are also in good form of late having beaten Sporting Braga, Chaves and Feirense in the Primeira Liga as well as securing a 2-1 win away at Estoril in the Taca de Portugal.
Away from home in the Champions League though presents a very different challenge and their last three visits to German clubs in this competition have all ended in defeat for Benfica, losing to Schalke 2-0 in 2010, Bayer Leverkusen 3-1 in 2014 and 1-0 at Bayern Munich last April.
