Icelandic side Hafnarfjordur avoided defeat in the first leg away to Irish outfit Dundalk and they now seemingly have the upper hand with home advantage in the second leg of this second round Champions League qualifier.
Hafnarfjordur earned a 1-1 draw in Ireland last week, and with current form being in a solid state for this evening’s hosts, they look the favourites to progress to the third qualifying round. FH are unbeaten in their last 12 matches in all competitions and they currently sit top of the Icelandic top flight two points ahead of Stjarnan.
FH’s overall home record stands at a solid 3-2-0 8/4 at their Kaplakrikavöllur ground on the domestic front, and indeed are unbeaten in their last 11 league matches on home turf. Scottish striker Lennon (4 goals) and Bjornsson (3 goals) look the likely anytime goalscorers for the hosts tonight.
Visitors Dundalk took the lead in last week’s 1-1 draw with Hafnarfjordur but let their lead slip just ten minutes later as the two teams couldn’t be separated, so they now face a tricky trip to Iceland for this second leg decider.
Dundalk head into this game on the back of a four-match unbeaten run though having beaten St Patrick’s Athletic, Derry City and Longford Town, but Hafnarfjordur will represent a much tougher task I feel this evening, especially now they’re back on home turf.
Dundalk have had limited experience at Champions League level and their previous appearance last season ended in a 2-1 aggregate loss to BATE Borisov.
