Maltese outfit, Hibernians, will be looking to go one step further in this season’s Champions League first round qualifier when they take on Estonian side Infonet Tallinn at their Hibernians Stadium in this first qualifying round first leg.

Hibernians took out the Maltese Premier League title by a seven point margin ahead of their closest rivals, Balzan at the end of last season to be crowned champions and progress through to the Champions league qualifiers where they’ll be looking to repeat last season’s heroics.

Hibernians registered a shock 2-1 home win over Maccabi Tel Aviv a couple of seasons ago in the second qualifying round first leg on home turf, but were then duly thrashed 5-1 in the away leg as Maccabi turned the screw. Anyhow, confidence will be high for the home side here as they’ve won five of their last six on home soil.

Visitors Infonet Tallinn won the Estonian Meistriliiga title at the end of last season to secure their place in this year’s Champions League qualifiers, thanks to a last day 2-1 win away at Nomme Kalju which saw them edge runners-up Levadia by a two point margin.

The new Estonian domestic season is also well underway now, so Infonet Tallinn have an advantage of sorts as they’re match-fit, but the rigours of a domestic league season and european involvement is difficult to balance, even for the strongest of teams.

This season, Tallinn have made a reasonable start at home, but away from home they’ve lost four of their eight matches on the road already. Striker Prosa (17 goals) will need to be watched closely.

Hibernians seems to have the edge, but I’ll give the quarter-ball on the hosts as Tallinn are mid-season.
