The second of the Champions League semi-finals begins on Wednesday night with Monaco taking on Juventus in a mouthwatering first leg clash at the Stade Louis II, to determine who will meet either of the Madrid clubs, Real or Atletico, in the final.
Surprise French package Monaco, cruised through their quarter-final tie against Borussia Dortmund as they progressed at the expense of the German club 6-3 on aggregate following a valuable 3-2 win away in the first leg, which was backed up with a convincing 3-1 win in the second leg on home turf.
On the domestic front, Monaco are enjoying a fantastic season as they sit top of Ligue 1 with a three point lead over usual champions PSG, and they’ve certainly transferred this form onto the european stage as they kine up with Juventus in this semi-final. A rejuvenated Falcao up front has become a dangerous customer again in attack, and with Mbappe and Germain in support, the hosts have to be taken seriously.
Italian side Juventus executed the perfect ‘one-two’ over Barcelona in the quarter-finals as they chalked up a vital 3-0 win at home in the first leg against the Spanish giants, and then a shut-out in the second leg 0-0 draw saw the Old Lady through to the Champions League semi’s.
Similarly to tonight’s opponents, Monaco, Juventus are enjoying top spot in the Italian Serie A although they hold a larger margin over second placed Roma with a valuable nine point cushion with just four league matches remaining.
Juve therefore look well placed to make another appearance in next year’s Champions League but this upcoming semi-final with Monaco will stretch them in the final third as they’ll most probably have to score at least once tonight to keep pace with their hosts. However, this shouldn’t be a problem with prolific goalscorer Higuain (23 goals) in harness.
