2013 UK Open Darts Betting Odds and Preview

Van Gerwen edges Taylor for UK Open favouritism

The Reebok Stadium in Bolton is the setting for the 2013 edition of the UK Open Darts betting. This is the eleventh edition of the tournament, which will be stepping up to the oche at beginning of June, bringing some more high quality darts betting your way.

This is something just a little bit different for your darts wagers though as this is the FA Cup of darts. Just a straight, round by round knockout with no second chances and the beauty of it is that the big guns could be drawn against each other at any stage of the competition. There is no big seeding avoidance for the players here, it is all down to the luck of the draw. So this invites the chances for some big upsets in giant killing acts in the big tournament which provides fast and furious darts betting action.

2013 UK Open Darts Betting Odds at online bookmaker Paddy Power
Michael van Gerwen 2/1, Phil Taylor 3/1, Raymond van Barneveld 11/1, Simon Whitlock 14/1, James Wade 16/1, Adrian Lewis 16/1 Gary Anderson 25/1, Robert Thornton 25/1

Naturally, despite the huge field all vying for glory the big names will take the lion’s share of the market action. It all starts with Michael van Gerwen, who has been lined up as the ante post favourite for 2013 UK Open of Darts betting. This is on the back of the Dutchman’s performance in Premier League, where he beat Phil Taylor in the final. That was a good response from the quick fire, heavy hitting Van Gerwen after losing in the final of the World Championships at the turn of the year to The Power.

Van Gerwen is definitely the rising power in the game and Phil Taylor is already seeing his usual supremacy and favouritism in tournament betting slipping to the Dutchman. Van Gerwen is going off as 2/1 favourite with online bookmaker Paddy Power for darts betting in this one. Helped along by winning the Dubai Masters title at the end of May.

But Phil Taylor isn’t that far behind at 3/1 in the 2013 UK Open of Darts betting. Taylor at least recovered from some stumbles through the regular season of the Premier League of Darts 2013 edition to make it through to the finals. He did suffer some uncharacteristic lapses during the season though, but in the end it showed that he still can’t be counted out.

He did of course land the 2013 World Championships as well and almost the rest of the field will want to avoid him. But it is getting to the point where you don’t know which Taylor is going to turn up. He’s not infallible any more and he was beating by Andy Hamilton in the quarter of the Dubai Masters recently. Taylor has history at the UK Open, winning four of the previous ten editions, the last time coming back in 2010. He reached the final of last year’s event, where he lost to Scotland’s Robert Thornton, who may not make a bad outside shot himself.

Robert Thornton, by and large, was pretty solid and impressive during his debut Premier League season. He just missed out on finals night for the 2013 Premier League, but scored some big wins along the way. He is the defending champion at the UK Open and that should carry some confidence forward as well. Still, he is well out at odds of 25/1 to double up on his success, something that only Phil Taylor has ever done before at the event.

He could be around the same sort of offering in value as England’s James Wade in 2013 UK Open Darts betting. Wade has won the event twice in his career (the most recent victory coming in 2011) and he recorded some big wins in the Premier League, at least over the first half of the season. He ran out of steam when it mattered most but he made the semi’s and followed it up with a semi run in Dubai. He is playing some good darts, just a question over his consistency.

But the real value at the event behind Taylor and Van Gerwen should be Raymond van Barneveld. He was one of the top players through the Premier League darts season, falling in the semi finals to old foe Phil Taylor. But the big Dutchman hit back hard with a run to the final of the Dubai Masters where he was gunned down by Van Gerwen in a thrilling final. Has been scoring heavy and finishing accurately all season. Shouldn’t be too far away from a title.
