David Luiz (Chelsea)

Chelsea V Wolves
The Blues have been riding their luck a bit in the Premier League, scraping a 1-0 win over Stoke on the weekend. But they are finding ways to win, just about and no doubt after a busy week, Roberto Di Matteo will be shuffling his cards. The Italian has a big squad at his disposal and he will probably start utilising it more. The London side will be content enough with home advantage against Championship side Wolves, which should make this encounter more palatable to them. Championship side Wolves head to Stamford Bridge on the back of a league win on the weekend and will be confident of an upset although the Bridge hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for them in recent times.

Chelsea v Wolves Betting Odds at online bookmaker Bet365:
Chelsea ¼, Draw 5/1, Wolverhampton 9/1

Verdict:
This should translate as a home win at the end of the day here. Premier League leaders Chelsea should have enough in reserve to see off Wolves. The Blues have enjoyed high scoring triumphs over Wolves at Stamford Bridge in recent times and it would be a major shock if Wolves pulled out a result. Chelsea probably will bring a few new starters into the line up for this one, especially with a big match against Arsenal coming up in the Premier League on Saturday. Wolves will probably be all gung-ho about this and keen to claim a big scalp. With two away wins and two clean sheets in a row in the Championship, they will enjoy the underdog role with nothing to lose. They will look to Sylvan Ebanks-Blake for goals, who has produced their best efforts up front this season. But Chelsea have the real touches of quality which they can call upon and should end up being a couple of goals better than the Championship side. A Chelsea -2 Asian Handicap for a price of 5/4 could be worth taking a look at with online bookmaker Bet365.

Head to Head:
Chelsea won their home Premier League match against Wolves last season 3-0. In their last six visits to Stamford Bridge, Wolves have managed to score just two goals while Chelsea have banged in fifteen. In the last eleven meetings between the two clubs (in all competitions) there have been nine wins for Chelsea, one draw and one win for Wolves. So recent history is firmly stacking up in favour of the Blues on this one. The overall head to head between Chelsea and Wolves stands at 39 wins for Chelsea to 38 from Wolves with 26 draws.

Chelsea Daniel Sturridge

Chelsea V Stoke
The Blues are without a win in their last three competitive matches now, the rot setting in against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup. With draws against QPR and then Juventus, Roberto Di Matteo needs to get his side playing just a little bit better. The defence of Chelsea has come under some criticism and with Stoke’s aerial power and directness, the home side could come under some big threats from set pieces. The Blues have won their previous two home matches in the Premier League this season, but Stoke haven’t tasted defeat yet.

Chelsea v Stoke Betting Odds at online bookmaker Bet365:
Chelsea 4/11, Draw 15/4, Stoke 8/1

Verdict:
This should be a real test of character for Roberto Di Matteo’s men here. The Chelsea system is still a bit flawed, a lack of ability to really hold on to the ball in the middle of the park, and Fernando Torres cutting a frustrated figure up top, not really part of the team. Chelsea squandered a 2-0 lead against Juventus during midweek and it could have been worse for them because the Italians were wasteful in front of goal. However, Chelsea have won their last five home matches against Stoke and haven’t conceded a goal against the Potters in the last four. So there is good reason to suggest that Chelsea will get things back on track.. This should be a win for the home side given the run of form they have against Stoke and they have it in them to win by a couple of goals, that is the margin by which their other two EPL home matches have been won by this season. A Chelsea Two Goal Winning Margin is trading at a price of 3/1 with online bookmaker Bet365.

Stat Attack:
Stoke have not won any of their last 11 away matches
Chelsea have won the last five home matches against the Potters
Stoke haven’t scored in the last four visits to Stamford Bridge
Chelsea are without a win in three matches in now in all competitions

Head to Head:
The Blues are in the ascendancy in the head to head against Stoke. Chelsea are undefeated in their last ten matches in all competitions against the Potters and that is a pretty strong run. Stoke have failed to find the back of the net on their last four visits to Stamford Bridge, while Chelsea have netted twelve goals in those four matches. So things are heavily in favour of the Blues who have won the last five home matches straight against Stoke.

Online bookmaker promotion:
Stoke City of course are kings of the draw. They have picked up four straight draws this season in the league, and in all competitions they are on a stretch of six straight draws in a row. They frustrated Manchester City to a draw last weekend and will they shut up shop and keep Chelsea at bay? Online bookmaker Bet365 have some great coverage on football betting with their 0-0 Bore Draw promotion. If a match ends in a 0-0 draw, then Bet365 will refund any losing bets placed on the Correct Score, Scorecast or Half Time/Full Time market. This is good coverage from online bookmaker Bet365 who offer a free £200 bet for new customers registering an account with them, and deliver great football betting coverage through their excellent live in play service.

Chelsea v Stoke Betting Preview:
Can Roberto Di Matteo get Chelsea back on track? The Blues are without a win in three games and there are some problems which need fixing. They don’t look very capable of holding onto a great deal of possession and the back line is looking a bit disorganised and slow. Chelsea have some great young talent at their disposal to try and shake things up a bit. It could all come down to whether Di Matteo is going to be brave enough to shake up his team a bit and give other players a chance. It worked in playing young Oscar against Juventus, but the Brazilian is likely to go from the bench, so too new signing Victor Moses, as Di Matteo will likely continue with Lampard and Mikel in the middle with Juan Mata and Eden Hazard supporting Fernando Torres. Chelsea are on a good run of form at home against Stoke, but they really need to up their overall level of performance and game if they are going to really maintain any title challenge. They have been the early pace setters, but after a uninspiring 0-0 draw at QPR the last time out, Chelsea need to find a way to tap into their potential.

Stoke, under Tony Pulis are always going to be difficult opponents for any team. The Potters have picked up four draws in a row in the Premier League so far, only one of them being a 0-0. So they are really hard to knock off and will amass their defensive ranks to try and earn at least a point at Stamford Bridge. You would have to think that that would actually be a good result for them. They may have some advantage in this match by throwing long balls forward to Peter Crouch up front because he can really trouble the Chelsea back line which is not looking too solid at the moment. Stoke will try and block up the midfield make life as difficult for the home side as possible. The Potters will be a threat from set pieces and while the stats are against them, the way they are playing at the moment, they could hang on in there fore a draw.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

Chelsea V Juventus Champions League
A big night for Roberto Di Matteo as he starts the defence of the European cup at home against the Italian Champions. Chelsea of course battled and ground their way to success in the competition last season and now they kick off what many are deeming to be their mission impossible – retaining the trophy. They will face some formidable opposition in Juventus, who have a 100% record in Serie A this season

Chelsea v Juventus Champions League Betting Odds at online bookmaker Bet365:
Chelsea 11/10, Draw 23/10, Juventus 13/5

Verdict:
Realistically Chelsea would probably be happy for a point from this one. This is a tougher match than match than many people will be anticipating for the Blues. Chelsea had their 100% start to the new Premier League season snapped when they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw away at QPR on the weekend. They must raise their game from that to take on Juventus, who have rattled off three wins from three in Serie A. The problem for Chelsea is that they haven’t been at their best this season, but they haven’t been exposed, not in the Premier League anyway. They were in Europe when Atletico Madrid tore them apart in the UEFA Super Cup. Chelsea may not get too many chances, even at home against Juventus, who have a very, very good defence. Therefore, the should be good value in taking some coverage on a draw here. Juventus are a good side and will really test the defending Champions. Juventus are a threat and taking them as 0 Asian Handicap for a price of 6/4 at online bookmaker Bet365 could provide good value.

Stat Attack:
Chelsea won all of their home matches in the Champions League last season
Juventus have failed to win in their last 11 competitive matches in England
Chelsea have won their group seven of the last nine campaigns
Chelsea have won eight of ten Match Day One fixtures
Juventus were unbeaten in Serie A last season

Online bookmaker promotion:
Online bookmaker Ladbrokes have a great Money Back Special running for Chelsea v Juventus betting. If Chelsea summer signing Eden Hazard scores the first or the last goal of the game, then Ladbrokes will refund any losing First Goalscorer bets. In the popular market, Fernando Torres is trading as favourite in the market, with Daniel Sturridge and Juan Mata back at 8/1 along with Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard. Juventus threats Sebastian Giovinco and Mirko Vucincic are both at 8/1 at as well. So plenty of value around with the extra coverage from online bookmaker Ladbrokes who offer a free £50 bet for new customers who register using the special code FB50.

Chelsea v Juventus Betting Preview:
The pressure is on Chelsea like never before here. The Blue set the bar high for themselves last season and after winning Europe’s top club prize at the tenth attempt, can they live up to their expectations again? The two sides did come together in the 2008/09 season at the Round of 16 stage, and a goal from Didier Drogba sealed a 1-0 home win there. The Blues have won five, drawn one and lost two of their eight home European matches against Italian opponents. The Blues have been pretty good on the opening day of the Champions League winning eight of the last ten, so there could be value in them. They haven’t looked particularly sound this season at the back and without the outlet of Eden Hazard and new signing Victor Moses, the Blues look still a little short of a world class finisher in form.

Juventus have only won two of their 19 contests away against English opponents, so it hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for them. They are without a win in their last eleven on English soil. However, you have to look at the strengths which they put forward last season in going the entire Serie A season unbeaten. They won the league on the back of a tremendous defence and have gotten off to a bang this season, scoring nine and conceding just two so far in the Serie A. Two of the three wins have come on the road where they have netted seven times already. The history books don’t point to Juventus coming away with much from this, but this is one occasion where you may not be able to ignore current form and status

19th September 2012 / Lee A Jackson - Category: Champions League

Eden Hazard (Chelsea London)

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid UEFA Super Cup betting will settle the first European trophy of the season. This is a coming together of the Champions League and Europa League winners. This match will take place at the Stade Louis II on Friday night. Chelsea of course, famously battled their way past Barcelona and then Bayern Munich on their way to lifting the Champions League trophy for the first time in their history last season. It was a success which was borne on the back of some defensive teamwork and a whole lot of grit and determination. No-one was ever suggesting that Chelsea were the better team against either Barcelona in the semi finals of Bayern in the final itself, but the London side, under the guidance of Roberto Di Matteo got things tactically right and took the honours with the merit of team spirit. So while Chelsea face up to the immense challenge of trying to defend their European title this season, they have started the Premier League season with a bang, picking up three wins from three. Eden Hazard has been the stand out performer for Chelsea so far, delivering exactly what he was brought in to do, by providing assist It has allowed Fernando Torres to flourish as well, and Chelsea are looking a much better attacking unit. Di Matteo has said that he will take the UEFA Super Cup seriously and sent out a strong side.

They will take on Atletico Madrid who beat out Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Europa League last season. After opening the new La Liga season with a 1-1 draw against Levante, Madrid hit top stride and crushed Athletic Bilbao 4-0 in their second match. Athletic Madrid of course has the immense forward talent of Falcao, who netted himself a hat-trick in that 4-0 win, and he has been a target of Chelsea but the London club hasn’t been able to get close to him. There is a pretty good balance in the Atletico Madrid side and they are not afraid to get their foot on the ball and play adventurous football. It was what we saw from them when they inflicted defeat on Manchester United last season in the Europa League. So a very competent side and they aren’t ones to sit back and soak up pressure. They will get forward and try to make their own luck, which should produce a pretty open game for Chelsea v Atletico Madrid Betting.

Chelsea v Atletico Madrid UEFA Super Cup betting odds
Chelsea 13/10, Atletico Madrid 2/1, Draw 12/5

Cisse - Santon (Newcastle)

Chelsea V Newcastle
A big showdown this weekend as the two unbeaten sides go head to head. Chelsea have already gotten two matches under their belt, having had to squeeze and extra match in during midweek. But the two clubs’ 100% records are on the line at Stamford Bridge. This should be an entertaining match to come giving the line ups of the two sides Newcastle took a two nil win here last season and Chelsea’s defence has not looked rock solid.

Chelsea v Newcastle Betting Odds at online bookmaker Bet365:
Chelsea 1/2, Draw 10/3, Newcastle 11/2

Verdict:
Straight to the point, there could be an upset on the cards again here with the dangerous Newcastle attack turning up. A price of 7/2 for a Newcastle Draw No Bet at online bookmaker Bet365 on this one looks tremendous value. They are good enough for a draw. This is going on the basis that Chelsea haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five Premier League home matches, and both Man City and Reading have shown up their defensive frailties already this season. Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba terrorised the Blues defence last season and look sharp enough to do it again.

Stat Attack:

  • Chelsea are without a clean sheet in their last five league matches at home
  • Chelsea have only won one of the last five meetings against Newcastle at Stamford Bridge
  • Newcastle won last season’s corresponding fixture 2-0
  • Newcastle have lost two of their last three away matches in the Premier League

Head to Head:
Chelsea have a good home record against Newcastle. Out of seventy five meetings between them at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have won 42 and lost just 12. However, we should turn to recent times here and see that Chelsea have won just one of the last five home matches against the Magpies in all competitions. So not great form and another reason to suggest that a draw may on the cards for Saturday.

Online bookmaker promotion:
Online bookmaker Blue Square have a great online betting promotion running for Chelsea v Newcastle betting. If the visiting Magpies win the game, then popular bookie Blue Square will refund losing First Goalscorer, Correct Score and Player Special bets. This is a great bit of coverage from the bookie, and in the First Goalscorer market you can look at options like Fernando Torres at 4/1 and Papiss Cisse out at 8/1. So great value around and in the Correct Score market for example, a 1-0 Chelsea win will fetch a nice price of 6/1.

Chelsea v Newcastle Betting Preview:
Chelsea have started the new season with back to back wins, taking out Wigan away from home in their opening fixture and then staging a comeback against Reading in midweek. The biggest impact on the new Chelsea season has been Eden Hazard who has already four assists (including two penalties) in his first two matches of the season. That provides a tremendous amount of hope for Chelsea as they try and build a new identity of attacking football. Not all the pieces are quite there yet and they continue to be linked with right back Azpilicueta as well as Edinson Cavani. The Blues have finally had a bid for Wigan’s Victor Moses accepted, and the forward will add great pace and creativity into the side. So the future does look quite bright for Chelsea, but there are still issues at the back. The Blues can be defeated by pace and players running directly at them, that is just what Newcastle will bring to the table. So it is that unpredictability at the back which raises question marks over Chelsea and this is the best attack in the league season that they have come up against so far.

Newcastle opened their season with a win against Spurs on home soil. They were second best to Spurs in the first half, but the Londoners were wasteful. After striking first though after half time, Spurs equalised by then a Ben Arfa penalty settled the three points for the Magpies. So a good start in a tough couple of first fixtures for them. This is a good test of their early mettle and they have the pace to cause Chelsea problems. The Magpies sent out an understrength side to face Atromitos in the Europa League play off on Thursday night, as obviously there are bigger fish to fry here. Chelsea’s first teamers though have played two games in the past week, and will that tell? Newcastle of course finished above Chelsea in the league standings last year, and manager Alan Pardew will be hoping for a win which would at least pull them level on points with the Blues, with a game in hand this early into the season. They may need to start quicker than they did against Spurs though, because Tottenham could have gotten themselves into a comfortable lead if they had not been so wasteful.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

Chelsea V Reading
Mixed fortunes for the two clubs who come together midweek because of Chelsea’s involvement in the European Super Cup. The Blues opened their account with a 2-0 away win over Wigan, negotiating a tricky opener successfully, while Reading needed a late penalty to earn themselves a point against Stoke City at home.

Chelsea v Reading Betting Odds at online bookmaker Boylesports:
Chelsea 1/4, Draw 9/2, Reading 11/1

Verdict:
The Blues are firm favourites here, especially at home. They didn’t open with a flourish and bang, not in the big attacking style than many had expected them to come out with. However, Roberto Di Mateo’s men got three important points on the board and now have a great chance to follow that up. It is all about confidence and momentum out of the blocks and this should be a comfortable enough ride for Chelsea. They will surely have the extra touch of class and fire-power to see off the newly promoted Reading, who didn’t cause too many threats up front against Stoke on the weekend. Should be worth a conservative price of 8/13 with online bookmaker Boylesports for a Chelsea/Chelsea Half Time/Full Time bet.

Stat Attack:
Chelsea are unbeaten in their last six meetings against Reading, in all competitions.
In their history, Reading have only managed to pick up seven away wins from 38 attempts in the EPL
In four EPL meetings between the two sides, there have been three red cards
Chelsea have lost just one of their last nine Premier League home matches

Head to Head:
In the last four head to heads between the two sides at Chelsea, the Blues have won three and drawn one. However, it is worth noting for your betting that all three wins did come by a single goal margin, which suggests that this could be close. Another thing as to why this could be close is that Chelsea only managed six shots against Wigan, their lowest tally in an EPL match since 2007. Which suggests that they still have some way to go to be a strong attacking force. Chelsea have never lost at home against Reading in six meetings.

Online bookmaker promotion:
Online bookmaker Boylesports are offering a 1st Goal Assist Cashback promotion for your Chelsea v Reading betting. Back a player in the First Goalscorer market, if that player doesn’t net the first goal of the game, but he assists on that first goal, then Boylesports will refund your losing first goalscorer stake. So a good bit of coverage to be looking at to take and in the First Goalscorer market, Fernando Torres is trading at 3/1, Daniel Sturridge at 9/2 and Eden Hazard at 6/1. With Hazard being the leading assist leader in La Ligue last season and already picking up an assist and having earned his side a penalty, the little Belgian may be worth a shot with this coverage. Online bookmaker Boylesports offer a free £20 bet for new customers registering an account with them.

Chelsea v Reading Betting Preview:
Thanks to two strikes inside the first ten minutes of their season opener against Wigan, Chelsea walked away with three points. However, they were second best at times in possession and in attempts on goal. So it wasn’t all plain sailing, although Wigan, to be fair, didn’t create a lot and Chelsea’s centre half duo of John Terry and David Luiz looked pretty solid. The Blues may get back midfielder Ramires who missed the opener because of an illness. The brightest point about Chelsea’s opening match was the contribution of Eden Hazard. He won himself the Man of the Match with a great performance and was the stand out payer in the game. The Blues still look like a work in progress and there will have to be more integration of new players, like Oscar and Marko Marin (when he’s fit again). People are looking for Chelsea to win with style and flair, they are under orders from owner Roman Abramovich, we didn’t see that against Wigan, and while they were largely comfortable, there should be more gears for them to go through.

On their return to the Premier League, Reading needed a penalty (and a blatant one at that) to rescue a point against Stoke. Given Stoke’s lack of punch in front of goal, many had expected Reading, at home, to get things under-way with a win. The Royals were a good attacking side in the Championship last season, but they were open at the back. It looked as if they had tried to rein that in a bit, and they didn’t look all that composed or threatening going forward against an average side. Reading found away wins hard to come by the last time they were in the top flight, winning just two and haven’t won any of their last nine EPL matches in London. The Royals don’t look a bad side, they look as if they could potentially grow in to the season and they will cause sides problems. The amount of chances they are gong to get at Stamford Bridge should be limited and this will be a tough step up for them.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea)

Chelsea v AC Milan betting sees the Blues continue their pre-season Tour of the USA. Roberto Di Matteo’s men head to the clash on the back of a defeat against the MLS All Stars though. After holding a 2-1 lead with goals from John Terry and Frank Lampard, the Blues were undone by some poor defensive lapses and the All Stars pounced. Chelsea have not really looked like a well rounded side at all yet during the pre-season. The defence has certainly struggled to get up to par, and they have been lacking quality up front, with young Belgian player Romelu Lukaku getting time to prove himself following the void left behind by the departure of Didier Drogba. So Roberto Di Matteo still looks as if he is trying to pull all the pieces together and get those pieces into a system and formation which works for him. Frank Lampard has continued to look evergreen, and German Marko Marin has also been impressive for the Blues on the Tour so far. So while there are issues to be ironed out, and with Chelsea stating that they are looking to sign a couple more players before the start of the season, they need to start getting tighter because the Community Shield against Manchester City is right around the corner.

In fact, this will be Chelsea’s last pre-season friendly match before taking on City at Wembley on August 12th. So this may be the match where Chelsea pull something close to a starting line up together, at least for half of the match in order to get a good look at things. The thing about this match is that Chelsea’s experimentation with formations and personnel has at least kept a good team unity going in the side and that may just help them against a somewhat fractured AC Milan. The Milanese of course sold two of their star players to Paris St Germain, shipping out Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Motta. That has caused some fractures with fans, although Milan’s reasons were purely financial (and quite smart). Such division the transfers have caused, that AC Milan offered to refund pre-season tickets to fans who had purchased them ahead of the big sale. So now the big task at hand for AC Milan is that they have to try and prove that they can be dangerous and competitive without Ibrahimovic leading the line with his big goals.

Milan beat German side Schalke 1-0 recently although their opponents had laid siege to the Rossoneri’s net in the first half, dominating the game. But AC Milan stood firm and then snatched a winner 20 minutes from time. The other big rumour at AC Milan at the moment, is that Brazilian midfielder Kaka may be heading back to the San Siro from Real Madrid. So Milan perhaps are not going to be as strong as they were last season in Serie A when they were challenging for the title, so Chelsea’s youthful exuberance and that chance the players have to earn a first team spot, could see the Blues take the win in this one. They will want to bounce back after the MLS All Stars defeat

Chelsea v AC Milan Betting Odds at online bookmaker Bet365
Chelsea 7/5, AC Milan 8/5, Draw 12/5

Ireland v France 2009 - Henry

Chelsea continue their tour of the USA, after opening with a 4-2 win over the Seattle Sounders and then a draw against Paris St Germain. Six years ago Chelsea went up against the MLS All Stars and suffered a 1-0 defeat. Now the London club is going to get another crack of the whip against the very best that the MLS has to offer. Chelsea are apparently going to take the match seriously, after looking really sloppy in defence against the Seattle Sounders, and using a high amount of substitutes in both of their previous games. That is part and parcel of pre-season friendly matches, but Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo has said that he is not going to use as many subs throughout their game against the MLS All Stars. The start to the new Premier League season is coming ever closer, and prior to that, Chelsea, last season’s FA Cup winners have to face Premier League Champions Manchester City in the Community Shield.

Di Matteo is keen to try and increase the minutes of some of his players. Amongst all the substitutions, it has been an interesting looking at formation. Di Matteo looks as if he has been preferring a 4-4-2 formation, which has at times looked decent, but at others, looked lack-lustre and laboured. Of course this could be all experimentation and Chelsea will get back to their regular 4-3-3 when the domestic season rolls around, but Di Matteo does have to think about fitting his new players like Eden Hazard and Marko Marin into the line up. But the 4-4-2 doesn’t look a tremendously dynamic one, and after failing to create too much going forward against a strong and organised Paris St Germain defence, it is going to need some tweaking. But that is what these matches are for.

The MLS will be coached by head coach Ben Olson of DC United. The MLS have gone up against Manchester United in the past couple of years, and prior to their meetings against the Red Devils, which both ended in defeat, the MLS were 5-0-1 against international opposition. So the MLS All Stars will be out to prove that they are better than their two defeats against Manchester Unite d (with a combined scoreline of 9-2). LA Galaxy’s Landon Donovan has been voted into an MLS record 12th appearance this year and naturally has been saying that the side have the motivation and quality to match up with the European Champions, Chelsea There will be more familiar names in the MLS All Star squad, with LA Galaxy’s David Beckham and the New York Red Bulls Thierry Henry getting voted into the squad as the starting eleven.

Ancelotti - Makelele (PSG)

After picking up a 4-2 win in their opening match of the Herbalife World Football Challenge 2012, Chelsea move on to face a much tougher test in the shape of Paris St Germain. Young Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku netted himself a brace against the MLS side Seattle Sounders, and new signings Eden Hazard and Marko Marin both chipped in with a goal as well for the Blues. Naturally Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo made good use of his squad, and it showed in their display, which was less than impressive or convincing Chelsea, along with the hosts were sloppy in their defensive approach to the game and that naturally led to plenty of changes in the game at the CenturyLink Field. After taking a 2-0 lead, Chelsea could have conceded a bag of goals, but were pegged back to just 2-2 at half time. Both Hazard and Markin were among the brightest players on the pitch for Chelsea, while Lukaku, just 19 years old remember, was impressive with his strength. So these are important games for Chelsea’s fringe players, as they try and play their way into contention for a place in the team next season.

So, some positive pointers for Di Matteo, but his side will have to be a whole lot sharper and more focused if they are going to get anything out of a strong Paris St Germain set up. This is one of the much anticipated pre-season friendly games out in the Herbalife World Football Challenge (which is just a random collection of fixtures between some of Europe’s biggest names and MLS representatives). So after feeling their way back into action, Chelsea’s stars will face a stern test on Sunday, July 22nd (a 7pm kick off American Eastern Standard Time). This match is taking place in New York at the famous Yankee Stadium, home of the New York Yankees. This will be the first match ever held at the Stadium and makes up another great attraction for soccer in North America.

Chelsea v Paris St Germain betting will see a battle between these two financial powerhouses in the game. It is also a re-union between Chelsea and their former manager Carlo Ancelotti, now in charge in Paris. Ancelotti captured the big signings of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva to push the French side forward next season. They couldn’t catch Marseille in the French League last season, but are now already strong favourites to take the league title next season, as well as making an impact in the Champions League. Some good news for Chelsea is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic won’t be making his début for PSG against them. But Parisians splashing out over £150 million during the summer, including signing striker Ezequiel Lavezzi, shows that they have the might of spending power to match the likes of Chelsea. So this could be a tight match up between two pretty decent squads, which could have a lot of talent on show and should be a real football fest.

Chelsea v Paris St Germain Betting Odds at online bookmaker William Hill
Chelsea Evens, Draw 11/5, PSG 11/5

David Luiz (Chelsea)

Chelsea start their pre-season by participating in the Herbalife World Football Challenge 2012. This is just a collective of some of the top European teams playing matches out in the USA. Chelsea will face the rising force of Paris St Germain and AC Milan during their tour of the USA, but they will kick things off on Wednesday with a match against the Seattle Sounders. The match will be played at the CenturyLink Field, and this is the second time that the two sides have met. The Blues were visitors to Seattle during the Sounders’ expansion year back in 2009, and Chelsea won that match, albeit labouredly by a 2-0 scoreline with goals from Daniel Sturridge and Frank Lampard. So now they will head back there to start their pre-season, and the reigning Champions League winners will, more than likely, test a few of their new and younger squad members. Roberto Di Matteo has been given the managerial job at Stamford Bridge full time and the club have been linked with just about every name that has come on the transfer market, from FC Porto’s Hulk, to Polish striker Robert Lewandowski.

Of course, Chelsea have lost some of their old guard like Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou, as they look to usher in a young era. They started the summer brightly by capturing the much sought after Eden Hazard but there is still the promise of more to come before the Premier League really kicks off. They have added Brazilian midfielder Oscar to their ranks, as well as Marko Marin, and with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Gael Kakuta and Romelu Lukaku offering forward options as well, Chelsea are assembling a good squad. Chelsea take their full squad to the USA, with their representatives who made it beyond the group stage of Euro 2012 joining up later on the Tour. The Seattle Sounders have failed to win any of their four exhibition matches played against European opposition, and they were trounced 7-0 last season by the visiting Manchester United So the Sounders have a point to prove, and the Pacific North West club have had a pretty good domestic season.

Just recently they reached their fourth straight US Open Cup final, as they beat Chivas USA 4-1. That means that MLS side are on a five match unbeaten streak at the moment in all competitions, and with them in full flight in their domestic season, they will be sharp and they will be keen to out-work and out-muscle Chelsea. The Sounders are sitting third in the Western Conference after a solid season, seven points back of leaders San Jose Earthquakes. The Sounders are a pretty solid all round side; they have conceded a goal per game over their nineteen league matches this season in the MLS, while they have scored 23 in that run, so they aren’t prolific They are a hard working team though, and should have high energy for the match up with Chelsea. Still, naturally, the MLS side go into the game as underdogs, but if it is a weaker, inexperienced Chelsea side that Roberto Di Matteo sends out, then the Sounders could be good for a draw.
