Well, the biggest game of the French Open 2017 so far will take place on Saturday from Roland Garros. It is the third round in the men’s draw and World Number One Andy Murray will be facing off against Juan Martin del Potro. These two famously met in the 2016 Olympic Gold Medal match which the Brit won, but when they met up in the Davis Cup a month later, it was the Argentine who got the better of the contest.

Murray is still looking like he is finding his feet and again, and just as in the first round, Murray needed four sets to progress as he battled past Martin Klizan to set up this third round clash with Del Potro. It’s been a tough year for illness, injury and form for Murray and he is an outsider in the French Open betting at Paddy Power. He still isn’t at 100% in health and naturally with the lack of matches this season, consistency is not there.

Andy Murray v Juan Martin Del Potro French Open Odds

Andy Murray 4/11, Juan Martin del Potro 9/4

So he is going to get a test against Del Potro, who was nursing a groin problem in the second round when his opponent Nicolas Almagro retired. Del Potro missed the Australian Open because he wanted to rest his body and because of his own injuries over the past few years, he is only ranked 30th in the world at the moment and that is why he will continue to run into the big seeds in tournaments, earlier rather than later.

Can Del Potro dig deep enough to punish the lacks of concentration that Murray has already had in this tournament? The two have met nine times before and Murray leads that head to head with a 6-3 record. The most recent meetings were those 2016 clashes in the Olympic Final and in the Davis Cup. They have met twice on clay and the head to head is 1-1 from those meetings. But they haven’t met on the dirt since the ATP World Tour Masters 100 Madrid 2009 which Del Potro won in straight sets.

Murray carried a 16-7 win record into Roland Garros this year while Del Potro was 11-6. This is likely going to be a tough game for both of them and there’s no reason not to expect this one to over three sets. Four sets in the match at Paddy Power is a price of 13/8 while a five-setter fetches a price of 5/2. With the problems that both of them have had this season, it is a real coin-toss when it comes to a winner, but whoever does come out on top will be all the better for it. Murray is carrying a -4.5 Games Handicap at 5/6 for the match with Paddy Power.
