It is off to the city of Barcelona this week on the ATP and after his record breaking 10th title in Monte Carlo over the weekend, Rafael Nadal is back in action again and he is trading as 5/6 favourite at Bet365 to sweep the board in this one. It’s a clay tournament and of course, Nadal has a big history at this event too. He is the reigning champion after his success last year, which was his ninth title at the tournament. This has actually been a good tournament for home players because until Kei Nishikori popped up with the title in 2014, a Spaniard (mostly Nadal, granted) had won each of the previous eleven editions of ATP Barcelona.
Andy Murray is having his first crack at the tournament since 2012 and this is the arena at which he played his first ever professional match back in 2005 when he was ranked 397th in the world. The lad’s come a long way. Murray enjoyed a very good season on clay last term, but slipped to a defeat in the third round of Monte Carlo last week against 24th seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Murray is still making his way back from injury and he is the top seed for this one on the acceptance of a wild card entry for it.
Rafael Nadal is the third seed and in the opposite half of the draw. There isn’t a great deal of depth in the draw, to be honest, not like there was last week in Monte Carlo. Dominic Thiem (who is in Murray’s half) and David Goffin really are the strongest dark horses in the field and Thiem coming through to get the better of things in Murray’s half may be worth a flutter until we see some proof of Murray returning to his sharpest, fittest self. At the moment though, Nadal ruled on clay last weekend and there may no be anyone in the field who can stop him making it ten in Barcelona as well.
