Well, the odds on England to win World Cup 2014, aren’t great. Roy Hodgson’s men are trading at a price of 33/1 with online betting site Bet365 to go on and lift the title. Their single success in the world’s greatest football tournament back in 1966 just keeps getting more and more distant, and the signs of the Three Lions repeating that don’t exactly improve either. At least they haven’t done so recently. Four years ago at South Africa, England were trading in single figures to make a run at the title. They barely scraped out of their group and were hammered by Germany in the round of sixteen.

This time around they have been left dangling at 33/1, not helped by having been drawn in the Group of Death alongside Uruguay, Italy and, not so much, Costa Rica. So Roy Hodgson’s men are looking at an uphill struggle to make it to the knockout stages again. But taking a silver lining look at that, if they do pull through against Italy and Uruguay, then at least they will have a lot of confidence to build upon for whoever they face in the first knockout round. It is likely to be either Colombia or the Ivory Coast waiting for them there. But if they finish runners up in their group that will set up a clash with Brazil in the quarter finals, while topping the group will most likely see the play Spain at that stage.

There’s no easy path to the final of the FIFA World Cup.

So what about each way odds on England to win World Cup 2014? Well, the each way terms run at 1/2 the original outright price, so the Three Lions would return you a decent chunk if they manage to just get to the final. That is actually a better value bet than going to the To Reach Final market itself and taking odds of 12/1 on them to reach the showcase match of Brazil 2014. But on the whole, summing up the entire pick of England’s chances at this summer’s World Cup, they are not fantastic. But with no pressure and not a great deal of optimism, will this be the time that they actually come through?

England expects...yes, but nothing more than a quarter final appearance at best. England are 1/100 to NOT win the World Cup this year.

But of course you don’t just have to head to the World Cup outright winner market to try and get some returns from England at Brazil 2014. They are 4/6 shots to qualify from Group D, while they are a longer 5/2 shot to go on and beat Uruguay and Italy to the punch and win the group. The best way to really get to the meat of England’s campaign at Brazil 2014 is by going over and taking a look at the England Stage of Elimination Market.

The shortest priced option there is 5/4 on them to take a tumble at the first stage. A second round exit is at 5/2 and quarter final elimination will fetch you 5/1. Then you’re looking at really long odds of 10/1 for them to get knocked out at the semi finals, stake and 22/1 on them to finish as runners up. Then it all brings it back full circle where they are 33/1 to win the 2014 World Cup.

Will Roy Hodgson throw the kitchen sink at this, entrust in the great youth that he has in the squad like Raheem Sterling, Ross Barkley and Daniel Sturridge? Will the Three Lions find some tremendous spirit and pull through their group stage against the odds? Will Wayne Rooney finally stand up and be counted when it matters most for England?

No certainties, but lack of expectation can sometimes lead to big things.
