Worth opposing Williams at Flushing Meadows

Tennis Betting

The final of the Grand Slam of the season is with us, the big Flushing Meadows event that is the US Open. This is the big spectacle to round off the season of majors with and more often that not, unlike the other three Slams, this is one that requires some extra grit, determination and stamina. After a long season players have to dig deeper than ever, play through those pains of injury and try to write themselves into the history books.

The tournament threw up a huge surprise last season with Italy’s Flavia Pennetta (now retired) getting her hands on the title. That snapped a winning streak of three titles for Serena Williams at the tournament. Williams though is back at the head of the market and looking not only to put a tough summer behind her, but also trying to match Steffi Graf’s US Open haul of five titles.

Williams is running as 5/4 favourite in the Women’s US Open tennis betting here, which is naturally a long way short of the of the rest of the field. But because of her inconsistencies over the summer as well as her nursing a shoulder injury, this could be another occasion where it is worth opposing her. You have the power players of Angelique Kerber and Simona Help both primed to make a run at the title while Garbine Muguruza in the mix as well. The draw could be all important here and Williams hasn’t got a particularly easy one along the way and she even has a tough opener against Ekaterina Makarova as well.

So the draw could get opened up pretty early on and this could be a wide open event again, just as it was last season. Olympic Gold Medal winner Monica Puig will probably be under the spotlight as well in this season’s US Open given her newfound fame. You can expect some thrills and spill along the way in this one and there are some great prices to found all along the way and don’t forget the threat of Johanna Konta, the bookmakers have big concerns over her. The chances of a first time winner here are pretty big.

US Open 2016 Women’s Singles Betting Draw

This is the crux of the deal. The top eight seeds are split over the two halves of the draw and this is what the draw of the US Open 2016 has thrown up.

Top Half: No.1 Serena Williams, No.4 Agnieszka Radwanska, No.5 Simona Halep, No.6 Venus Williams.

Bottom Half: No.2 Angelique Kerber, No. 3 Garbiñe Muguruza, No.7 Roberta Vinci, No.8 Madison Keys.

But before all of that you have to break things down into the quarters. You would most likely have a Serena Williams v Simona Halep showdown for a place in the semi final from the first quarter. They have been paired together up there and on the surface of things Halep would be the one to roll with. She has been in sharp form and the only player to have beaten her since the French Open is Angelique Kerber.

Halep went to last season’s semis at Flushing Meadows and would likely have to get through Williams to match that. If she hadn’t have lost against Kerber at Cincinnati recently, she would have been coming into this as fourth seed and then would have avoided Williams until the semis. No the greatest of draws for Halep or Williams really but because Williams has managed just the three singles matches since Wimbledon and because she goes straight into a  tough draw, this may be too much for her.

1st Quarter Winner Odds: Serena Williams 8/15, Simona Help 4/1, Carla Suarez Navarro 16/1, 20/1 bar

So Williams or Halep are likely to be lining up in the semi finals so who would they most likely be meeting from the second quarter? Agnieszka Radwanska is 4/1 favourite to win the second quarter but this is a stacked and wide open section with Karolina Pliskova, Venus Williams, Eugenie Bouchard and Timea Bacsinszky all in the mix there. Out of the mix there, the exciting Pliskova probably represents the best value after her win at the Western & Southern Open recently.

2nd Quarter Winner Odds: Agnieszka Radwanska 4/1, Karolina Pliskova 7/2, Venus Williams 8/1, Eugenie Bouchard 7/1, Timea Bacsinszky 12/1, Caroline Garcia 14/1, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 16/1, 33/1 bar

Down in the bottom half of the draw things looked really settled and not to hard to call out really. The third quarter looks set to be a three way duel between Garbine Muguruza, Madison Keys and Britain’s Johanna Konta. The dangerous floater in the quarter could well be Belinda Bencic. Muguruza and Konta could meet up in the round of sixteen which should be a great match up. Konta’s draw really isn’t all that bad and she could make a splash again in a major and there’s nothing wrong with the price on her to win this quarter.

3rd quarter winner Odds: Garbine Muguruza 15/8, Madison Keys 3/1, Johanna Konta 8/1, Belinda Bencic 8/1, Monica Puig 10/1, Svetlana Kuznetsova 12/1, Barbora Strycova 18/1, 33/1 bar

Angelique Kerber could have a huge fortnight. Not only does she have the US Open title in sight after collecting her first Grand Slam of her career this year at the Australian Open this year, but there is the chance to finish as World Number One as well. She also went to the final of Wimbledon And found herself in the final of the Olympics as well where she lost to Puig. Remarkably after run in Rio, she still had enough in the tank to pile drive her way to the final of Cincinnati in an immediate turn around. Kerber lost that but showed that there is no post-Olympic comedown. Kerber pretty much should run unopposed in the fourth quarter with only Petra Kvitova and Dominika Cibulkova in there to oppose her.

4th Quarter Winner Odds: Angelique Kerber 6/4, Petra Kvitova 5/1, Dominika Cibulkova 10/1, Elina Svitolina 14/1, 18/1 bar

US Open 2016 Women’s Singles Betting Predictions

Kerber has had a fantastic year and with Williams looking out of sorts at the moment, this is going to be a big couple of weeks for Kerber and she has been holding her nerve all season long and her performance in the Western & Southern Open which included a win over Halep, shows that she’s still on point. She is great value for this one, so too is Halep from the start actually. Because she has been lumped in the same quarters Williams, the price on her is going to be a little inflated and well worth an each way punt. Halep at 4/1 to reach the final is a great looking punt with Kerber 5/2 to get there.
