We have the Alfred Dunhill Championship to look at this week in European PGA Tour betting. This isn’t a field which is blessed with a whole host of top players, still, there is strong South African presence and they are worth looking at. There is actually some pretty strong value around for your golf betting this week, with Spaniard Pablo Martin looking like a sensible bet at the Leopard Creek Country Club in South Africa. The Spaniard has won back to back tournaments there, and looks completely at home in the very unique course. What is unique is that the course is played through a lot of wildlife which are still inhabiting their natural environment. Should he land the title for the third time, he would become only the fifth player in golf history to land a hat trick of titles at the same tournament. The last man to achieve this was Ernie Els when he won the Heineken Classic for the third straight year back in 2004. So it is a rare feat. There is just four European PGA Tournaments left before the season finale of the Dubai World Championship, and some players are still trying to squeeze their way into that, while others are looking to secure their Tour card on the European Tour for next year. While Martin has dominated here over the past two years, he hasn’t been in particular great shape with his form, and he is lacking a bit of confidence by his own admission. But out at a big price of 33/1 with Bet365 to win here due simply on his course history, he makes a decent outside shot realistically.
For your Alfred Dunhill Championship betting, you definitely need to look to players with great driving accuracy off the tee, as the majority of previous winners here have had high averages in landing on the fairway. Not sure that putting is going to be quite as big of an issue as approach work too, because just getting on the green in regulation will open up very good birdie chances. You can look at the history and naturally see a good showing at the event by the home grown South African players, who have produced three winners in the last six years, with Richard Sterne, Ernie Els and Charl Scwartzel tasting victory at Leopard’s Creek. So where does all this lead us in terms of good golf betting opportunities for the Alfred Dunhill Championships? Well, we should start with South African players, and here the two prominent names in the field this time out are Jaco Van Zyl and Thomas Aiken. Van Zyl has had a pretty decent year with a four top tens, and what realistically should put him in good stead, is that he is remarkably accurate off the tee at Leopard’s Creek. But Aiken is the one who is really representing good value for your money because he has won on the European Tour this year (at the Open de Espana) and has already landed a fifth place here last time out. In the 2009 Alfred Dunhill Championship he landed a fourth place finish, so has a very good balance to him when you weigh him up for your golf betting. With those two being home talents, then there is an extra little advantage on them.
But England’s Robert Rock could be the one to watch out for. A very popular character, who has also won on European Tour this year, earning his first Tour career victory when he came home first a the BMW Italian Open back in May. There is more to Rock’s case as well, because he finished with a second place finish at Leopard’s Creek two years ago, just two shots off the top, plus he also posted an 8th place finish here in the previous running of the event. Just to dip right down the golf betting list here and to pull out a complete long shot, look for England’s Robert Dinwiddie. You may well be asking yourself, who? But bear with us. Dinwiddie posted a sixth at the event last December, and also a top ten finish a couple of years before. Is not in great form to be honest, but is a horses for courses type of bet and there is extra incentive because he need a big performance to squeeze into the top 115 for the Race to Dubai from his current standing of 142. Dinwiddie is well out at 90/1 with Bet365.
