The sixteen contenders for BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2017 have been announced and these are the candidates which will go forward to the live show n Sunday, December 18th. It has been a big year of sport, including huge success for Team GB at the Olympics and Paralympics in Rio during the summer. There’s been no real shake up in the betting market since the announcement of the final contenders as Andy Murray is running as heavy odds on favourite at a price of 1/6 with Ladbrokes.

First of all, here are the nominees:

Nicola Adams – Boxing, Gareth Bale – Football, Alistair Brownlee – Triathlon, Sophie Christiansen – Equestrian, Kadeena Cox – Athletics/Cycling, Mo Farah – Athletics, Jason Kenny – Cycling, Laura Kenny – Cycling, Andy Murray – Tennis, Adam Peaty – Swimming, Kate Richardson-Walsh – Hockey, Nick Skelton – Equestrian, Dame Sarah Storey – Cycling, Jamie Vardy – Football, Max Whitlock – Gymnastics, Danny Willett – Golf.

29 year old Murray, who won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award last year could become the first person ever to win it in back to back years. That would be a feat and in terms of success he has stood out smile this year. It was another big season for Murray who won Wimbledon for the second time in his career and not only that, he managed to finish the season as the number one ranked player in the world, deposing Novak Djokovic of the position by winning out at Barclays World Tour Finals.

While it has been a big year for British athletes, really the only other two who can stand up and challenge him would be cyclist Laura Kenny and distance runner Mo Farah. Back at the Olympics in the Summer, Kenny (nee Trott) became the first British woman to win four Olympic gold medals and she has became such a hugely positive role model. Her husband Jason Kenny became a six time Olympic Gold Medalist in the summer too, but it is Laura Kenny who has grabbed all of the spotlight in the British public and voters on the night are likely to throw a lot of support her way.

There there is Mo Farah who achieved something incredible at the Olympic Games in the summer. He bases just the second main event to retain both the 5,000m and 10,000m titles. Even a fall in the final of the latter distances didn’t stop him and he is the most successful Olympic track and field athlete of all time for Britain. He is really deserving to be up there getting nominated, but as it is for Laura Kenny and the rest of the field, taking down Andy Murray is going to be a pretty tall order.

Actually shorter priced in the Ladbrokes BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2017 betting market then both Kenny and Farah is Alistair Brownlee who won the Olympic men’s triathlon title, becoming the first man ever to retain it. His public face was increased when he helped his exhausted broth Johnny over the line in the finale of the Triathlon World Series in Mexico.

For us in BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award 2017 betting, it has to be Murray all the way, with Laura Kenny the best outside shot to come through and pip him.

Andy Murray 1/7, Alistair Brownlee 8/1, Mo Farah 20/1, Laura Kenny 20/1, Gareth Bale 33/1, Max Whitlock 50/1, Nick Skelton 50/1, Jason kenny 66/1, Jamie Vardy 100/1, 150/1 bar
